Another good read:

NVIDIA says "significant quantities" of laptop GPUs are defective, stock tumbles

If you're the type to watch the late stock tickers, you might have noticed that NVIDIA's stock just took a pretty big hit, down 24 percent to $13.56 -- that's because the company just informed investors that "significant quantities" of previous-generation graphics chips have been failing at "higher than normal rates," and that it's lowering its Q2 estimates due to pricing pressure. NVIDIA will be taking a $150M to $250M charge against earnings next quarter to cover the cost of repairing and replacing the affected chips, but didn't specifically announce what products were defective, just that they include GPUs and "media and communications processors." Laptop makers have apparently already been given an updated GPU driver which kicks in fans sooner to reduce "thermal stress" on the GPU, and NVIDIA says it's talking to its suppliers about being reimbursed for the faulty parts. That's great and all, but we'd really rather know which chips specifically are failing -- if you're serious about playing in the big leagues, you better come clean, guys.

I bought it refurbished on the 3 month HP warranty... So, it does have NVIDIA specs and AMD processor..

Hence why I am asking for advice, I did my homework after I bought the computer and realised I got the inferior processor and crap battery life. But, It has been good until recently. I was gonna buy a Sony Viao and just happened upon the HP and bought it thinking it looked nice and had good memory, specs etc.. wireless, bluetooth..

I have it back to the repair shop..

What should he be doing to fix it then??

Yeah, thanks for all your help. I read some customer complaints and this is what came up that sounds like my problem exactly

"My HP laptop DV 9500 (bought in Nov 2008) is equipped with nVIDIA video card M8600GS. My laptop is a year old and today all of sudden my screen stopped displaying. I took it to the service center and they reloaded the bias. It worked. After 2 days, colored lines appeared in my screen and my computer shutdown again. Now it is not booting. Looks like the bias software should be reloaded again. I checked on net and found it is due to nVIDIA cards and there is no fix for it. Now I am unable to use the laptop which was bought for $1350. The service center is asking me to replace the mother board which costs Rs 30,000 INR"

Mine got those lines before is said goodbye. I wonder if it's junk then.. my repair man wants another crack at it and he has already charged me 120,000 won for the repair. I hope he just gives me the money back and we can call it quits.. or he repairs it with new parts and not just reuploading the Bios...

Alan:

Thanks so much for this. It pretty much seals the deal on me NOT buying a refurbished laptop, which I had considered doing this summer. I have purchased refurbished before (once from Gateway) and it died 3 days later. I have come to the conclusion that "fix" the problem is really "cover up" the problem and send it back out the door with a shorter warranty.

Well I got 18 months out of it before it died. I just like the computer and it looks to good to go in the trash.. but what does it matter how something looks if it doesnt work. Now my issue is just waiting for a Korean postal company to pick it up and take it back to the repair shop.. where no doubt it will not get fixed again.. money down the drain.

Sometimes you gotta throw em in the trash. My old laptop unfortunately went to the trash last year. The screen burned out on it and they wanted 1mil won to replace it. I bought a whole new computer for that much.

The mac looks like an alright deal. You might want to see if it has the apple care (or can still get apple care). The 3 year warranty is totally worth it IMO.

Thanks for mentioning the AppleCare. I totally forgot. My MacBook does have AppleCare that extends through February 2011.
