Quick question about how some of you other public school teachers deal with noisy and disruptive students. I started carrying a stick, its just a basic tree branch that was left in my classroom. I started poking and tapping kids who are being loud. Does anyone else do this type of thing ? My co teacher wants to talk over kids, but I just poke them (not hard) to let them know to be quiet .....

I know some of the Korean teachers use sticks, I was wondering if anyone else used one ?

That all depends on how you personally feel about corporal punishment... If you can live with yourself, as an adult... as a human... Then by all means threaten, coerce, and hit kids with your stick...

I have a big ruler that's come along to certain classes. The foot-long plastic board erasers in some classrooms will also do the job. Or sometimes a stick left behind by a previous teacher or HR teacher.

Just about all of my classes have been all right so far this year. In fact I can't even recall kicking a pupil out yet. In fact apart from playing with phones and forgetting textbooks I've hardly punished anyone. Hopefully the year carries on at this pace and it's hardly even a concern.

I've got a nice one. A custom-made bamboo job. My kids even wrote "I love you" on it for me.

i can't handle all the PC bullshit that some people adhere to. He said he 'taps or pokes' his students so that they are quiet. At what point did that kind of thing make such a leap as to being defined as 'corporal punishment'?!! Are you honestly serious??!?! HONESTLY??!!!
I poke my kids too, with a plastic thing that used to have a giant hand on the end of it, until it broke off. They are embarrassed more than anything, and they're usually quiet immediately. For the record, my kids love me, and i've had no complaints of abuse (although i have had some interest from Cheney et al, asking if my 'plastic prodder' could be a good way to illicit a confession from fake terrorists - apparently there's some controversy over waterboarding...).

It's the same thing with sports days. Nowadays, people think it's a good idea to give every kid a trophy, even for coming last, because it might 'shame' the student, and hurt their feelings if they don't get one. It's ridiculous - if you're 11 years old and weigh in at a solid 150, then you goddam should be ashamed, and you sure as hell don't deserve a trophy.

Stick? I got a built in taser and I also give candy out evenly distrubuted to all the boys and girls, even if they weigh a solid 151 and come in last place. And I got them to put little hearts all over the taser that say, "Teachuh, we love you."

Seriously, if you, as an adult, cannot handle a group of children without tapping them or poking them with a stick, you don't belong in a classroom. That goes for anyone from any country... And that also goes for being an edutainment monkey or bribing students with candy.

I will give you that students need to be responsible for there action and they should be rewarded their achievements and helped to do better when they fail. Not everyone can win all the time... And that is a lesson they need to learn.

What they don't need is a threat of violence hanging over their heads... Whether you hit them or not... whether you would ever hit them or not... The threat is still there...
