I've been offered a job in a hagwon in Siheung. Has anyone got any knowledge/advice about the area, or even the Gyeonggi province in general?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks |

Quite a few Siheungs about the place, some very far from a subway.....
Gyeonggi province has about 4 Siheungs. |

Siheung is a rather sprawling port/manufacturing city. Some places look pretty nice, some are a bit run down. You're going to be 30 minutes to an hour outside of Seoul by subway, but then you have to account for getting to the subway. And then, once you get in Seoul, it can take a while to get where you want.
It's on the periphery of the Seoul metropolitan area, and it kind of feels that way. You've got a few western restaurants here and there, and there's movie theaters around. You shouldn't have any trouble finding health clubs, large supermarkets, or other general conveniences.
When I checked last year, the population report read 400,000, if I remember correctly.

Really? Where? There's a lot of close-sounding cities, but only one Siheung. |

Siheung-dong in Seoul is one example. If you look at the subway line 1 (just a few stops after Anyang), there's "Geumcheon-gu office" until VERY recently that station was called "Siheung", but it caused so much confusion, with many people assuming that was Siheung-si and not Siheung-dong. |

I worked at a swinewon in Siheung-si, (Jangok-dong, I think) for nearly two years. At first, I used to take a crowded (never any seats) 30 minute bus ride - sometimes with a crazy driver who bumped into curbs while turning corners at breakneck speed - to Ansan station (which was way out of the way, I found out later.)
Although the job advertised that it was about a 40 minute bus ride to Seoul, it used to take me about two-and-a half hours to get to Itaewon via that route.
Eventually, I found that I could take a 40 minute bus ride to Bucheon station, which saved me quite a bit of time (at least thirty minutes).
The director where I worked was quite a character, but he always paid me - even when he was practically going bankrupt and had to scramble to pay the rent. |

Swinewon mush have closed down quite a while ago.... I've been here in Jangok-dong about 4 years. I really like it here but I don't really care for the city. My wife and I live in a really huge appartment with wonderful views for next to nothing in rent.
I love it here, but I certainly wouldn't recomend it to someone who was coming to Korea for the first time.
There used to be a really good comunity of teachers around this area, there probbaly still is, but over time I just got bored with people coming and going and the false friendships that were so fake. |

Is it possible to catch swine-flu at a swinewon?
For the original poster's sake.. "si" = city and "dong" = district (inside of a city).

Because it is way way far out from many places where westerners frequent....
I've met so many people that have been here and midnighted because it is so rural. |

If you call Siheung-si a city you are having a laugh. |

Jammer there is definitely another Siheung, and that's the one at the end of line 4 (Oido, Jeongwang) stations.
I think that's the place chickenpie is referring to, and actually I wouldn't cal it RURAL at all - though it depends where... there's the Sihwa Complex (old Siheung) and the newer city built up north.. and there's a rural/farm like divide between the two parts of the city and if you're THERE, I feel for you.
otherwise, I'd say it has more of a 'suburban', but working class, feel.
if you're in the Sihwa Part of town, taking the subway to Hongdae will take slightly less than 1.5 hours, no buses needed thank you. (assuming you're within reasonable walking distance of Jeongwang station)
I WOULD agree that if you're a outgoing, party minded foreigner, you'll die a very slow death here, because there is almost NOTHING to do, going outwise (re clubs, bars, etc)
however, everyday living wise, it CAN be quite comfortable, and enjoyable.
Even though I'm in a tiny appt, it's less than a 5 min walk to school, less than 10 min walk to a decent gym, walking to E-mart is about 20-25 mins, subway station is 20-25 min walk. There are several parks nearby, including a large one with a great running track, and where I can easily tan topless when the weather gets nice (like NOW), without having to deal with amused or annoyed Koreans seeing a topless man not wanting to look pallid.
There are no Western style eateries here, but that's a good thing because you'll save a ton of money this way. There is a Paris Baguette though, and that place is a life saver.
the combined populations of old/new siheung is 500K, so you can certainly call it " a city" - just not a big one |

I didn't like it there. Lived in Daeyadong. Apparently, there are 13 parts of Siheung. Knew someone who lived in Siheung also, but was 1 hr away and close to Suwon station and I was close to Bucheon station. |

Siheung-shi is simply very big and there are different areas, some rural, some more built up, some industrial.
I have lived in all 3 different kinds of areas and enjoyed them all (and got slightly peeved with them on the odd occation.)
First year i was in daeya-dong. i loved that area. there is a good group of people there and though your nearest subway is bucheon (20 mins) i had no problem heading into seoul or a night out in bucheon was fab. have to admit its the company that makes siheung fun, as it is not the busiest of cities.
the second year i was out in the rice fileds. 50 mins to the nearest subway, no where near my friends so i became queen of the buses. but that was fine because that's what i'd signed up for (and got huge appartment).
i'm now in jeongwang dong which is as far away from seoul as you can get but it's a nice area, if a little polluted. it's easy enough to get about.
so basically you need to let me know where in sihueng the job is and i can tell you (if i know where it is), what kindof area and if i can introduce you to people there.
good luck on what you decide. |

you're saying the Siheung municipality on line 1 is the same as the Siheung on line 4 (Jeongwang/Oido?)
I always thought they were different.
btw... what do you do for fun around Jeongwang-do.. Curious people want to know |
