The Daily Show: Moral Kombat

Kind of knocked the hope out of me.

(The change has already been cashed out for the bailouts).

Oh, pshaw! You're in serious danger of sounding like ManintheMiddle, and that is not meant as a compliment. But be that as it may...

I'll see your Jon Stewart and raise you....one Jon Stewart at the 6:50 mark:

This should explain a great deal. Very Happy

Do you really want Obama to address each of the culture war issues 120 days into his administration? Really? You really honestly want a continuation of the last 40 years? With the same issues, the same tired old arguments...and the same outcomes? Hmmmm?

He tried to strike some kind of middle ground at Notre Dame over the weekend. Wanna bet he won't try some similar tack in the fairly near future with Don't Ask?

Politics is the Art of the Possible. Black and White, my way or the highway is the politics of a sick and distorted polity, the result of the progressives trying to go too far too fast...or the conservatives holding on to the past too tightly. You decide.

Like ManintheMiddle? Actually Obama's unwillingness to prosecute torture and his unwillingness to let gays serve in the military openly gay are real issues.

Yes, the Cliff Huxtable (sp?) analogy is cute.

Its completely possible for him to overturn Don't Ask Don't Tell. This is 2009, not 1993, and he has a clear mandate unlike Clinton.

Weak.

Americans want gay people to serve openly

Quote:
Seventy-five percent of Americans in a new Washington Post-ABC News poll said gay people who are open about their sexual orientation should be allowed to serve in the U.S. military, up from 62 percent in early 2001 and 44 percent in 1993.

75% in favor today;

versus 44% in favor in 1993.

Ya-ta, you know as well as anyone what 75% means in the political context. It means overwhelming majority. Many people who are against gay marriage are for gays serving in the military.

Obama seems scared to be unpopular, no? I was listening to a New Yorker podcast a while back and one of the editorial writers said that he is taking the lessons of the Repub attacks on Clinton in 94(?) too seriously. His mandate is stronger, the country more liberal and the like.

75% is phenomenal. I wasn't aware support had gone that high. A few more interviews like this one might do the trick:

I heard that somewhere, too. It sounds right. Can't blame Obama for not wanting to distract from his goals, but at 75% I think he can begin to take the lead. I like the idea of him issuing an executive order suspending Don't Ask till Congress addresses the question and changes the law. It would be even better if some states change the laws for the National Guard (if that's legal for them to do).

I still think it's politically wise of him to avoid pushing a radical policy on the most divisive social issues. I keep thinking of that famous story from Kuros' fav Dem, FDR...Some group or other came to the Oval Office and made their case for some law or other and the prez said, "I agree with you. Now get out there and make me do it." It's an extremely clever political tactic to 'submit' to what the public demands--and save your political capital for tough fights on issues where you have to lead.
