Hello,

I'm a big fan of comic art and do some comics coloring myself. I was wondering where, if at all, you get American super-hero comics or any sequential art comic books in South Korea?

Is the comic culture a noticeable sub-culture like it has become in the United States or other countries?

I live in Suji, about 24 miles south of Seoul.

Thanks.

About the only place I've noticed any are in the Kyobo Bookstore on Jongno. Don't expect much of anything recent.

Yes...it's in korean though...they have comic book reading rooms which charge by the hour and are like libraries....we need those in the states!

If you want good ol fashioned migook comics, your gonna wanna download them....they pretty much scan all comics now and put them for download online...pirates also scan japanese manga too...quality is excellent(scanners take pride in their work)...if you have an HD tv or projector, you'll be able to enjoy comics like you never did before....on the big screen.

My best suggestion is to download digital comic books from Demonoid or the Pirate Bay in '.cbr' format. Then, if you really like specific books, make a list, and then place an order from Amazon or some other online store who ship to Korea.

You can get just about any comic book online, for free.

First, download this small program to view '.cbr' files:

Then use uTorrent to download your digital comic books.

Here are a few links to get you started:

Happy reading!

Very Happy

If you want the to collect the actual books its not really avialable here. I have found one online store. Its more expensice then back home but when you factor in shipping and currency conversion (lately) its worth it. The selection is small.

If you know gmarket its a minishop on it
http://shop.gmarket.co.kr/usacomics

It has English, but to order I would get a korea to help you out.

You can also get comics and trade paperback versions at What the Book? in Itaewon.

There's also this place:

although the comics you'll find are all in Korean (and slim pickings if you're looking for the "western" style of comics). I picked up the entire Watchmen run there.

Good American comics (many of which are written by British writers Smile )

-Watchmen (of course)
-100 Bullets
-Plantetary
-Invincible
-The Authority (V1 and 2 and maybe 3)
-The Ultimates (V1 and 2)
-Fables
-Concrete

That's all I can think of off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are dozens more I'm forgetting. Good reading.

You have to register, but it's free. It's a little easier to use something like this. You can pick and choose and most everything appears there.

I've found some trade paperbacks and graphic novels in a number of bookstores.
For example I've bought Flight 1-4, Watchmen, and some others from Sobics in Yongsan at Ipark mall.
I've bought Persepolis and some Batman GN's at What the Book? in Itaewon, and I've bought some Bone for my GF at Kyobo in Jamsil.

Most bookstores will carry the trades, but if you want floppies, I've only seen a handful of issues at What the Book? in Itaewon.

Also I recommend the downloading of comics.. pm me if you need help with readers etc. (i even port them to my nintendo ds to read at school/on the train.)

Excellent suggestions Harlowe.
I'd like to add
All-Star Superman
We3
Nextwave
and the recent Captain America by Brubaker and Epting
as some recent comics that are good superhero fare.

The best comic I've come across in a LONG, LONG time: The Goon
Also, check out: The Walking Dead

And I'm really surprised no one brought up Y: The Last Man--seriously one of the best comics of all time.

I'm glad someone mentioned What the Book. Also there's a used-only English-language bookstore at the other end of Itaewon---near Jenny Cellular, Thunder Burger, a bunch of used motorcycles, and Noksapyeong Station. There's a wealth of American comic books there from the 80s, 90s, and even more recent. The sign just says "foreign book store" It's a small place at sidewalk level with extra used books on display out by the sidewalk.

if you go there, pick up their used copy of Mike baron and Steve Butler's "The Badger" graphic novel. It's been sitting there forever. I'd pick it up myself, but I've already read it dozens of times. Left my copy back home though. Amazing stuff deserving of far wider recognition.
