Hey guys!

My girlfriend wants to buy a laptop this weekend. We'll be going to Yongsan. I haven't bought a laptop in a couple years and I've never done it in Korea. My girlfriend is not Korean, so she won't want Windows to be in Korean.

So, can I just ask them to put on English windows at Yongsan? Also, she wants Vista. This is standard in Korea these days, right?

Next, here are the basic specs she's looking for..

must be light and compact (smaller screen than usual)
2GB RAM
DVD Writer
sd card reader or multi card reader
built in camera
wireless

Now, I'm assume most modern laptops will have these specs. Am I right? How much would you expect this to cost?

Thanks a lot in advance

Chet

If you buy an HP computer from an authorized store, you can set the Windows Vista to English at start-up. If it is already set to Korean (newer HP with Vista only) you can reinstall from scratch and set it up in English. They should do this for you.

You should buy something Core 2 Duo, if possible, or Core Duo at a sub-1 million won price. You'll probaby be around the 1 million to 1.2 range for something smaller from HP.

Don't go for the small HP netbook... the ATOM chip is not good for much other than surfing, IMHO.

Thanks Bass. Do you know if they have HP authorized shops at Yongsan? I've never been.

1.2 is what I expected.

Again, thanks!

There are HP authorized dealers in:
I'Park (above Yongsan station),
the terminal building - the blue building across the tracks (2nd floor),
the son-in plaza (the one with the big gigabyte sign on it.

Good for you!

What were the specs/price, if I might ask?

The Dv2 is a smaller laptop, but not a net book. Still, it's very portable.

I'm not too tech-smart, but the basics...
it's 64 bit, dual 1.6 ghz processor, 2 gigs of ram (upgradeable to 4), 320 gb hard drive, ati graphics card (I'm not sure which one...)

It also has a detached DVD writer and a cordless optical mouse.

It came to 1.2 million (slightly less). This compares to the prices I saw on American websites, so I think it's OK.

Hopefully we haven't made a mistake, but she seems very happy with it.

No one buys laptops online?

http://www.slickdeals.net can be a great resource for deals.

Just go to forums--> Hot Deals --> you can filter deals at the bottom by category.

When I eventually replace my laptop, I'll probably buy online. First, though, I'll consult the Dave's ESL tech guys to see what they would do.

However, my girlfriend really wanted to see the laptop and try it first.

Do you guys often buy computers online?

I only buy online now--always cheaper.

However, I think it really comes down to how particular you are about a laptop's design--both aesthetic and functional design.

For me, I couldn't care less about how a laptop looks (unless it was completely hideous). It's all about the price and the specs. So I don't need to worry about checking a laptop out first, if I see a good price online that matches the specs I'm looking at, I'll pull the trigger.

I find that people tend to be pickier than me and prefer to inspect/test laptops in a brick and mortar store first. People might want a certain look, or even care about how the keyboard feels. What I'd recommend for people who fit in that category is to look for deals online and see if you can find a store where you can test it or a similar model out--then purchase online.
