What program do you need to open a FLAC file? |

Or WinAmp or KMPLayer.
I'd recommend KMPlayer as a universal media player over VLC. |

KMPlayer is pretty decent. I use that and Mplayer GUI. I gave up on VLC due to the "smurffing effect". |

Why use it? Does it save that much over .mp3? |

BE...you know about this stuff...FLAC is lossless, thus the large file sizes and, if your MP3 player supports it, the high battery consumption. I am not sure exactly, but the bitrate is nutty...over 1000 I think.
For most people, given their crappy headphones and listening environment (on the subway, for example), a 320 bit MP3 is overkill. The type of music will also play a part in dictating need; rock or pop just doesn't warrant FLAC reproduction. |

Basically correct.
FLAC is only worth downloading if you have some seriously good hi-fi stuff to reproduce the detail therein.
Any MP3 over 190kbps is enough for me.
I am downloading some FLAC files as I've recently upgraded my PC's sound card to an HT Omega Striker 7.1. Only 68,000 in Korea. Good deal compared to the US. But still, it doesn't seem enough to really dig out the detail in FLAC files. I'm sure my Sony headphones aren't up to the job either.
I'd guess you'd need a $300 sound card and headphones of at least $200 to hear FLAC properly......
......or a killer hi-fi!! |

Nahh... never used FLAC. I do have about 15 SACD"s though. Don't bother with them, unless you're into classical, jazz, or vocal tunes. Otherwise, they're really not worth it, IMHO. |

Sometimes due to the incredible lack of downloading options, I have to download flac files, but I just convert them with FLAC Frontend, then reduce them to a more practical size. |

www.mediamonkey.com/
Plays FLAC, converts to other formats, organizes music, free to download.
The beta version even has easy last.fm integration. |
