i'm trying to improve my diet some as a way of gaining muscle, and in doing some research, have found that brown rice is highly recommended for that purpose. since most of the rice i see here in korea is white and void of nutrition, though, i'm wondering if anyone knows a good place to purchase regular brown rice in the Itaewon/HBC area?
also, do any of you have any recipe recommendations? or comments about incorporating brown rice into their diet as a way of getting into shape? |

I can find brown rice at any of the big chain stores near me. Home Plus, E-Mart, Lotte Mart--they all carry it. 현미 is the word for it, methinks. |

All of the supermarkets in and near Itaewon carry it. 현미 as Alvy said. I grill some chicken and mix it with the rice. |

Available in every supermarket I have visited, tho u may have to search through the endless bags of white.
Much much cheaper (which I find amusing). I guess it may be same as Jaoan where brown rice is seen as 'lower class food'.
I find it really nutty and tasty, tho I usually mix in flax or grains too.
My face recipe is stir fried tuna and kinchi with brown rice, |

If brown rice is much healthier than white rice, why do Koreans eat so much white rice? |

White rice actually starts out as brown rice, but the husk, bran and germ are removed and only the starchy core is left.
Brown rice has had just the outer husk removed, which is inedible, but the bran and germ remain.
In short, the main difference between the two is that milling has removed the outer husk layer of brown rice turning it white.

You've been here 5-years and you haven't found the brown rice yet? |

Never, ever discuss white rice with Koreans. I tried to explain to an adult class that white rice is totally devoid of any nutritional value, kind of like iceberg lettuce. "Oh no, you are very wrong" gasped the horrified students. "Korean rice is the best in the world. We have been eating it for 5000 years and just look at how great we are!". Well, I can't argue with that now can I? |

Indeed, I gave up on that lesson years ago. Back in 2004, when Korea was SUPPOSED to open up its rice market as per its agreement with the WTO, my students were all in a tither because Korea would be flooded with lower quality American rice. So we did the A=B, B=C, therefore A=C game. They just could not grasp it. And these are kids in a special purpose high school! Yikes. |

Gotta love people who claim that rice that has probably been polished by sugar is "good for health."
The OP might also want to research sweet potatoes, which are readily available everywhere. |
