Just about to sign a contract. I've read a lot of threads on Pagoda in general but I assume there might be cases where each branch might be different (For example, I'm certain the student base between say, Jongno, Shinchon, and Gangnam might vary a lot).
Any positives or negatives? |

Shinchon is a small branch, fewer students by far than Jongro and Kangnam. |

Don't teach at Pagoda!
Unless you like insomnia and never sleeping, working Saturdays, listening to sad old men and getting paid the lowest wage in all of Korea to do it, don't work there!
They provide half airfare, no housing, a pittance of a housing allowance, and charge pension. The suffering is not worth the pay. End of story. |

Of course I realize about the split-shifts.
Saturday work, as I understand it, is limited to two months a year and is paid as overtime.
The only reason I gravitate for it is the opportunity to live in that area and also to have adult students. Plus, I've got the offer. I have an interview for public schools, but in order to continue with that process, I'd have to decline Pagoda. |

And you can't lie to them and say you declined, then continue with it? It's not exactly fair of them to tell you to decline a job offer you have in your hand when they haven't even interviewed you yet. |

| It's more of a time frame issue. I'd be starting with Pagoda July 1st, which basically means I need to apply for my visa...NOW. Meanwhile, SMOE took 2 weeks after receiving my application to schedule an interview. Anyway, I guess I'll wait until the SMOE interview and then make my decision - ask them how likely I'll be getting the position and such. |

Going from visa application to visa issuance takes no more than 2 weeks, unless you're extremely unlucky. |

Uhh yeah I guess, but I suppose it isn't entirely unreasonable for them to want my documents 1 month before my starting date.
I mean, it's not something I would fight tooth and nail over. I think I just have to decide how much I want to go through the lengthy public school interview and acceptance process...which is taking its time because it's still 3 months away until it begins. |

PS is the place to be for e-2s. hagwons are... undesirable unless you have something special to offer and are getting exceptional pay, which you will not get at a pagoda. |

Do the math. Pagoda provides
1 plane ticket - 1,100,000 won
12 months salary = 2,500,000 x 12 = 30,000,000
housing allowance = 100,000 x 12 = 1,200,000
severence pay = 2,500,000
total = 34,800,000
Public provides
round trip air ticket = 2,200,000
yearly salary = 1,800,000 x 12 = 21,600,000
free apartment = value is equivelent of 500,000 per month 500,000 x 12 = 6,000,000
severence pay = 1,800,000
total = 31,600,000
so to be clear. pagoda pays only $3000 more a year than the lowest paid public school position and you have to work saturdays and do split shifts. no free lunch, you have to commute 4 times a day. bla bla bla. almost anyone can find a job making 2 million a month now, which would easily put them at level with Pagoda. If you can make 2.3 then you are definately making more than Pagoda.
Myth buster: Saturdays are NOT for only two months. That's a bald faced lie that only applies to Gangnam branch. And they are NOT overtime unless you are fully booked the rest of the month, which NEVER happens. you will always get the min, while working saturdays. |

Sure, anyone can find a job making 2.3 million teaching horrid, horrid Korean children. I think it's a given you'd get less dough for the incentive of teaching adults.

| I'm surprised to hear that they're hiring. My friend is good buddies with the hiring manager there that has since quit because Pagoda (specifically Shinchon/Hongdae) is having very serious financial issues. |
