Do hagwon's no longer spring for the plane ticket? The director I'm speaking to just asked me when I was purchasing the ticket. The last two jobs I held there, the schools purchased the ticket.
Is this a new policy, because if so, that's going to seriously hinder my plans to head back. Or is she just being cheap?

Some jobs will make you pay for the ticket, and they repay you when you arrive.
However I just flat out refused to buy it, and my recruiter paid for it and the school repaid the recruiter when I arrived. |

I'm not going through a recruiter so if this is what she expects, she needs to send me back my diploma and I'll look for a different job.

That's what I said to them. Either they will pay for it or they will send your diploma back. |

Sounds like the title to a new scary mystery movie where you buy this plane ticket and end up a stranger in a strange land going through all these really weird and wacky experiences of corruption and senseless unpredictable treatment.
I bought the air ticket up front, ended up in a stranger in a strange land where the locals can't stop taking 2nd and 3rd long staring looks, but got reimbursed 3 weeks later and it's not too scary and mysterious; just lonesome, boring, and quite a dull lifestyle living amongst the Koreans. In my years of growing up I was always fascinated about what Asia must be like and wished the world to be able to go to find years later, it gets very dull, boring, and awkward as forcing a square peg into a round hole to actually live there. Be careful what you wish for and what you buy into.

It's kind of like buying the bullets for your executioner. |

Coming from Thailand, I was offered a million won to get myself here. I will be given a million won to go back. Cool! A ticket will set me back 400,000 won. That is a good chunk of change.
That million came less than a week after my arrival. With my wife with me, it is a good deal for me. The airfare is enough for both of us with some left over!
If you are clueless about the position you are walking into, it could be a crapshoot. It is your responsibility to do your own research and make your own connections. |

Send it back...
LOL
If you want your diploma back, you're going to have to finish that presumably bunk contract. You should have it in about 13 months from now if you're lucky, or you could just order a new one and find a different academy that offers to re-imburse you. |
