ive been involved in all kinds of electronic message boards for years. from the old bbs's to internet rooms to discussion forums to this one...and i find that these things just attract a lot of cynical and smart ass people. dunno why. maybe it has something to do with the security people feel at being behind a screen and not actually being around anyone?

How do these two things relate, exactly?

ohahakehte, you may just have explained it. But if so, then there's nothing special about the negativity of many Korean ESLers - despite their best efforts to justify it. It's like they don't know that critical thinking can be positive and complaining could be productive.

Is pointing this out irony or hypocrisy? It depends whether I stop now or go on to suggest alternative modes of thought.

Well, I will take the OP at face value and say that when I come on here, it usually is to goof off or flirt or ask for job leads. You know, the useful important stuff in life.
But every now and again, I like to vent about Reason #362 Why Korea Pisses Me Off. I'm not a negative person by any means, I just find whining behind a slightly anonymous (cough cough) smokescreen to be refreshing. And I am sure many other posters on here would agree.

Rapier's analysis was accurate, though I doubt he wrote it.

I find the board a pretty accurate reflection of the mix of positive and negative vibes in life in general.

Hello, TJ!

You probably noticed the poll which someone posted, asking, "Are you happy in Korea?" The majority voted yes.

That means that the foreigners who are happy in Korea are a silent majority. But those who are unhappy in Korea are bullies. We are afraid to post on this forum, because when we do, we get responses like these:

Evil or Very Mad "If you see anything good about Korea, then you are not looking deeply enough under the surface. In fact, you are a naive, gullible, fool."

Evil or Very Mad "You can't possibly be happy here. You must be compensating. You're like a white person who shakes hands with every black person he sees."

Evil or Very Mad "If you're better off here than you were in your own country, then you must have been a real loser in your own country."

Evil or Very Mad "If you're loyal to Korea, then you're a traitor to your own country. You didn't give a hoot in hades what happened on nine-eleven, do you!"

Evil or Very Mad "So you like Koreans better than you like us, huh? All right, then, reject us! See if we care!"

Evil or Very Mad "What right do you have to be happy when we are unhappy? Don't you know there is a Law of Conservation of Happiness?"

Evil or Very Mad "Oh! So you're happier than we are! So you must think you're better than we are! Well, touch you!"

I really like this quote from rapier and couldn't have said it better myself: lol

Quote:
Here are the advantages/disadvantages of being a positive/negative type of person:

POSITIVITY: You see the bright side of every situation: you are always happy and attract others to your warm and approachable persona. People feel free to share everything with you. Nothing gets you down. The kids you teach love you. Each moment holds some promise, some opportunity, to help others or express your joy of life. You turn every enemy into a friend, every confrontation into a positive resolution. BUT: you aren't taken very seriously. You have no bite, no potency, like an airy fairy cloud floating high above everyones heads. Everyone agrees that you're a sound person, but boring, in fact. Your sense of humor has no edge, no spice.
NEGATIVITY: Women are attracted to your moody, brooding persona. People are interested by your sarcasm and vindictive, aggressive approach. Women feel safe with you. Nobody messes with you. You can bite anyones head off at a moments notice. Nothing is good enough for you, and life is never dull as you plot and scheme your way to the top. your kids live in fear of you and obey your every command. However, you never really enjoy life, appreciate the little things in life, or other people. People don't actually like you, although they might respect you.You are constantly fighting your way through life, to get a better deal, but somehow the glass is always half empty
.

Also- "Don't be so negative about negativity" has been expounded on in the past. I call this- selective negativism- everyone has the right to be pleasantly/extremely negative- it's just that some choose to be negative about negative people- and others- teaching in Korea. I also find that these negative/positive people are full of gassssssssssss or fluff. Sometimes it's fun to be full of fluff- until something goes badly wrong.

Sorry. I didn't realise you had to post a lot to be a regular viewer on this forum. I read it daily but becuase I don't post regularly does that make me a 'lesser user' and therefore someone who doesn't know the site?

Ever think sometimes people post when they are in pissy moods or too tired?

I know that is the case for when I post some negative things.

"Spit the dummy" is one of the strangest, and thus my favorite, of all strange Australian expressions!

"Lost the plot" isn't strange, but I equally love it- it expresses the problem quite perfectly.
