I've been told that this school, CDL, required that you write a short essay before starting the hiring process. This is before an interview or contract talk or anything. Has anyone done this? I understand the idea behind it. I even think that it's a valid one and shows that maybe they care a little more about the quality of their teachers. Thoughts?

Unless there's a native speaker on the hiring committee it's pretty meaningless. Just write lots of nice things about teaching and Korea.

I had to do the same thing for my recruiting process. Though it may seem redundant. I would approach it somewhat seriously. Your overall rate of pay will be affected if you write something that shows you didn't care.

Wario had to write one last year for his CDI application. These were the essay topics to pick from:
Quote:
Essay Topics for CDI Instructor Candidates

Directions: select one of the topics below and write a coherent essay in the Standard TOEFL format (introduction, body, and conclusion). Please write your essay in a Microsoft Word document, and when saving the document name it as your FIRST NAME, LAST NAME, ESSAY (John Smith Essay).
Also, please write the ENTIRE question you choose to answer at the top of your essay.

Length: 400 500 words (4-5 paragraphs, 1.5 - 2 pages) Time: 60 minutes

1. Do you believe that the United Nations still has a significant role to play in world affairs? Support with details and examples

2. Do you believe that capital punishment serves as an effective deterrent to violent crime? Give reasons and examples to support your answer.

3. Some people state that genetic engineering, such as stem cell research, will revolutionize healthcare. Others feel that this is morally wrong since it is a human attempt at playing God. Please choose a position and support it with reasons and examples.

4. With respect to the nature versus nurture debate, compare and contrast the roles of intrinsic and environmental factors in human development.

He picked the first one and made sure to mention Ban-Ki Moon.

I have to ask. What do those topics have to do with teach ESL in Korea? The topics as I see them are Political Science, Political Science/Criminal Justice, Political Science/Religious, Sociology/Psychology.

Sounds like a weed-out game. Perhaps the person who is doing the evaluating is a white face trying to make sure he gets someone who has at least half a brain...or perhaps has no brain and is someone who will lay down and obey.

The topics have a lot to do with Chungdahms teaching process since they ask critical thinking questions. They put a lot of emphasis a lot on WHY students choose a particular thing in their teaching methodology.

As far as what essay to choose, pick one you're interested in. They want to see how your train of thought works and may ask you very specific questions about it further into the interview process or at training.

Like I said, these were the topics sent to Wario. They already had his CV/resume and knew he was a Poli-Sci/History major, so maybe this was a selection specific to that major? And they use different topics for other majors?

I'm an English Lit major and got the same topics, although I was also given "What was the most important novel of the 20th century?" I think it has more to do with strength of written skills than anything else. I could be wrong though.

I think they revamp people's essays a bit and use them later in the classroom.

I was two years in a public position where the boss would demand we produce materials on he would put his name and sell to other Ks. I got really good at writing double entendres of which he is still unaware. Cool I know there's some waygooken somewhere in K-land chuckling at this moment. Wink

As in 'they give them the essays, let them study them, and then copy what they read'. They let the students use the answers to cheat.

I think they added a new one!

Parents in the 21st century invest money in their children's lives. Is "helipcoptor parenting" a good idea? And what is your opinion on "Black Parenting?" Some favor allowing children to fly from the nest and experience life. Others argue it was the parents' money, and so what if they have "Empty Nest Syndrome." What is your opinion?

Rory, your barely disguised innuendo begs me to give you my opinion. And that is for you to grow up and find out for yourself that the investment is much more than money. And people in general... parents, empty-nesters, or others, have many interests that go far beyond their children or the mundane, every-day lives they live.

That the internet can facilitate those interests... well, so be it. Any more lip from you and I promise to taunt you with visions of Oreos, REAL milk, and a thick juicy steak on the barby. Twisted Evil
