To my left, there are two gossiping teachers, or rather a gossiper and a listener. The listener is humming mmmm at the end of every damn syllable that the speaker says. She is even doing it sequence when there is a pause and she needs to catch up with some rapid fire mm...mmm...mmm...mmm. I'm going insane from the drone. It's like the receptionist in Office Space.
AHHHHHHH, She is still doing it! Save me!!! |

This seems to be quite common. My co-teacher constantly makes I-hear-you sounds (mmm, uh-huh, eung) when being talked to. Once after a sentence or two is great to let me know that he's still listening, but after every second word is overkill and a bit disorienting. |

I feel your pain. Fortunately, I rarely hear anything that is going on in the office I share with 12 K-females and 1 K-male. An MP3 player is the single most inportant element in my life next to atmospheric oxygen.

I had a student once who did the mmm mmm mmm thing, but she also had a super-active salivation disorder. She would spit and froth whenever she spoke. Other than that, though, she was as withered and flaky as a sundried spider.
But the worst thing was, she'd do the 'mmm mmm mmm' thing interspersed with a 'thhhp thhhp thhhp' thing...this was where she was sucking her spittle back between her teeth so as to avoid making a puddle. She sounded like Hannibal Lecter in that scene where he describes eating somebody's liver with fava beans and a nice Chianti.
"How are you today, ma'am?"
"Mmm. Mmm. Mmm; (thhhip) mmm, (thhhhip) mmmm. Finethankthsandyou? (thhhp) Mmmm, (thppsth) mmmm."
God, she was gross. |

Episodes of Law and Order, headphones and crank up the volume.
The only thing that gets to me is the slurping/sucking sounds. I dont usually hear it at school, but on the subway/elevator it somehow overrides my Ipod makes my stomach turn |

I concur with your philosphy, but add the following information. Listen to Conservative talk radio and your day will not only be more tolerable (until you hear what the liberal are doing), but you will be informed about what is really happening in the USA. |

Why on earth would I want to be informed about what is happening in the U.S.A., real or otherwise? I can think of lots of things I could do with my time rather than listen to details of a country I've never been to, will never go and don't like. I'd rather have my tongue beaten wafer-thin with a steak tenderiser and then stapled to the floor with a croquet hoop. |

That's fine with me but you wrongly attributed that quote to me.

What is the best MP3 player. I have a local iRiver I use when jogging, but it's a disappointment: it takes forever to look for a song in the millions that I have (and I'm too lazy to update my "playlist" daily--so saw it off if that's what you suggest). And iPods, while faster to scroll through, blow when it comes to their interface, iTunes (although I was told to try something monkey).
What do you think is best?
As for the mmummming, I think it's a linguistic fad: I've heard it being done by many K people recently, although I don't find is as annoying (I like the feeling I'm getting the attention I finally deserve). If it's not my conversation, I've always had a very good way of tuning out pretty much anybody and everybody on the planet at will.
The frothing, though, I could do without. I don't particularly like people sucking their teeth when they talk or after they've had a meal or so. Fairly disgusting, I'd have to say. |
