A few years ago there was a lot of talk about building a big arts and music complex on Nodeul Island in the Han River, but then it seemed to die down so I concluded that the plans had been quietly shelved.
Now it appears they are going ahead with it, and intend to have it all finished by 2014.
It looks quite impressive.

I think it's forward thinking to build and develop the arts as well as jobs. I got to give a thumbs up to the Koreans for continuing to develop and embrace modernity even in times when the global economy and capitalism itself is going very South. Building out of stone and titanium would produce them a long historical legacy of the project like Europe did with stone in classical times instead of cheap materials that'll only last 20 years. Only if they (and we!) can employ new technologies that truly make a green economy protecting the environment and our health will places be clean enough to sustain and support life and prosperity for the long term.
Before we knock something the Koreans are doing and I know it's cheap quality only for today instead of something to last the decades. Do you see anything new going up in America and other Western countries? Didn't think so. Home is just a decaying hulk of a Titanic from a bygone era though the natural environment is greatly improving (and growing up around it) over the years since the coal mines and factories shut down years ago as people sat in front of their TV's for the past 35 years. Especially in the past 10 years, the forests and everything are growing back up to the most they ever were since European settlers chopped it all down. It's very pretty and teaming with wildlife, but no jobs, culture, and arts, but the largest cities such as Chicago and New York do have some of the great museums of the world. I was surprised to learn 150 pound catfish and elk are native and coming back due to the lack of human economic activity for quite some time. No new arts, culture, and jobs back home, but I'd love to have a piece of that land and just build a cabin and do a home biz of some sort. Korea is modernizing as much as they can, but is paying a huge price much more than the money costs of developing; their natural environment, health, and future in jeopardy. |

It's called economic stimulus. |

Looks awesome. Seoul needs more things like that to make it an attractive city.
Another thing they need to do is make some subway stations more attractive or cool looking, especially the ones foreigners frequent. The company who does lines 5,6,7,8 have the most boring subway stations ever. Lazy and cheap bastards. |

Lines 5-8 is about to revamp their subway stations, turning them all into mini shopping malls. They're also going to install over 20,000 LCD's in the stations and the subway cars to bombard you with ads. |

In the Korean language version of the ohmynews article about the plans it mentions Korean greenies being concerned about the environmental impact of the project. Interesting that there's no mention of it in the English language version.
Mithridites, you're the guy who runs, or at least contributes to the website that translates Korean news stories into English aren't you? I'm coming back to Korea soon and need to pull my finger out in terms of study, so I'd be happy to have a go at translating some of the news about green issues. |
