Im gonna be coming to korea soon with epik and i was wondering if they'd have any issue with me for purchasing airfare from two different airlines with a stopover along the way. I'd fly from houston to san francisco (southwest airlines), stay for the night, and then head to incheon (singapore airlines) the next day. i'll actually be purchasing it directly from the airline's website, respectively, and therefore have a receipt for southwest and another for singaporeair. I wont be using the meta-search engines like kayak, orbitz, or sidestep that combines the trip into one itinerary.
Anyone tried something similar to this? |

Just keep ALL your boarding passes. I overnighted in Taiwan, from Australia, & ony had the boarding pass from Taiwan to Korea. Luckily, I'd kept the baggage checks from Australia through to Incheon, Seoul & was reimbursed in full.
I also flew the cheapest available flight. Korean Airlines was around 50% dearer. Read your Epik contract too.
Some contracts have replaced airfare reimbursement with a cash settlement. This might be the relevant clause:
Article 11 (Entrance Allowance/Exit Allowance) ① The entrance allowance of 1,300,000 Korean Won (KRW) shall be loaned to support Employee's entrance to Korea. A part of the entrance allowance shall be deducted for the Employee's medical examination (Medical examinations for all the Employees shall be completed during the orientation at the hospital(s) designated by EPIK. Employee who enters outside the orientation period shall complete his/her medical examination on his/her own.). In case of the termination of this Contract within six (6) months, including renewals, regardless of course or ground therefore, Employee shall immediately pay back Employer the above mentioned loan. If Employee works more than six (6) months during the term of Employment from the date of commencement, Employee's obligation to pay back the loan provided pursuant to this provision shall be waived by Employer.

I'm unaware of any EPIK contracts since March 1, 2009 that are different. There's no "might" about it... what you do with the 1.3 mil. is up to you.
Just be in K-land on the date of your 'orientation' so you can learn Korea has four seasons and kimchi is what allowed adimiral/general Lee to kick the Nips' collective ass (once in 5000 years). |

Isn't the EPIK contract offering a 1.3 million won travel pay each way for airfare regardless of how you travel to Korea without showing documentation or air tickets? That's what I got. It's 1.3 to come and 1.3 to go and 2 if you resign for another year even if you don't go home with another 1.3 when you finally finish to leave Korea. That's the new deal as I was told by other teacher how they used to reimbursed air tickets instead of paying money. |

My Epik Contract finished 1st October 2008. I no longer work for Epik, so am not privy to the new contract clauses, for 2009. But thanks for confirming the 1.3 million is in fact for airfare, as I suspected, cruisemonkey. |
