Most interesting areas have been covered here, keep in mind that a night out drinking in Taiwan tends to be more expensive than Korea. A good bar that is reasonable in "The Combat Zone" is "My Other Place". It gets a mix of foreigners and Taiwanese.
One thing you might want to check out is the night market known as Snake Alley. It can be a little much, especially if you're a bit squeamish about things like large boas being skined alive or turtles (again alive) having there shells ripped off and then stacked like patties. But it is an interesting stroll.
Also, if you are heading up to the National Palace Museum take a tour of Tienmou, that's the foreigner area but is more about shopping and imitating main street U.S.A. than being a centre of night life. |

Anyone want to go with me for the weekend? I got my ticket yesterday. It was only 280,000. Jan30-Feb1. If you can't go on that Friday you could meet me there on Staurday. Send me a PM. We could have a blast and checkout the other place teachers live. |

Sorry shawner, but I can't make it this time. I will, however, be going in May to catch up with old friends and to get a tattoo on my other forearm.
If you enjoy your time there let me know and we can hit it in style in May. |

One of the more popular websites on Taiwan for EFL teachers is www.tealit.com By the way, when did they construct that tower? Is it near that main station in Taipei? I left there in September 2002 after a year. Taipei is not so great, crowded concrete jungle mostly. But outside, even within a half hour of the city, things get different fast. And some nice areas, some beautiful areas in the country (it is a country despite Beijing's obstinance). It's a strange place, but perhaps not a strange as Korea. My year there was after 2-3 in Korea, and I reflected then how strange Korea seemed. Sometimes Korean shows would come on Taiwan TV channels, usually dubbed over in Chinese. They reminded me how strange and small and somewhat insignificant and unknown Korea is to most people outside it. Since I didn't learn any Chinese I 'd sometimes say "kamsamida" in the 7-11s there (which are everywhere in Taiwan). Anyway that country left little impression on my mind. It's also a bit strange, especially outside Taipei. I wouldn't recommend it for a holiday. Nor would I recommend Korea. Seems to me there are so many more interesting, nicer, cheaper places to go. |

The tower is up. Tealit sucks. Go to forumoser.com but don't expect it to be half as entertaining as this place. |

I'm going this weekend. TECO is supposed to meet me on Friday across from Taipei Station and show me the ins and outs. Anyone else who wants to go this weekend, please do it! 280,000 won and staying at a hostel, can't beat that! |

I'd choose a Taiwanese girl anyday over a Korean princess, but that's just me... |

That may be so, but she would never choose you. |

For what it's worth, i lived there for almost two years and it was a miserable little country.
As a tourist : shulin nightmarket and Danshuei are ok, but other than that its just a vacuuous little place with little to offer anyone, really.
Go to see hong kong |

I live in Taipei now, and I basically agree. Although you can find an decent variety of food and the new metro system and high speed rail are very nice, its no reason to visit as a tourist. Go to China if you want Chinese culture (albeit with more public spitting and urinating). |

Agreed, I spent a number of years living and teaching there. Extremely low TEFL salaries, chaotic, dirty, polluted....I'm happy to be done with it. |
