Recently my (GEPIK) school had a school festival that lasted until 9 pm. Since I was a first year teacher at the school I was forced to sing a song, along with all the other new Korean teachers and watch the student's performances.
The Korean teacher's all were able to get overtime and had to put their hours up online. However when I asked about me putting it in, my school told me I wasn't eligible for overtime on that day, citing it was GEPIK not the school who informed them.
Anyone had a similar experience? My school has been very good to me so far and helped me in every way I've needed, so I do believe the part it would be GEPIK and not my school.
If it is indeed GEPIK, isn't it illegal for me to be required to stay that late and not get paid whether it says so or not on the contract? |

Did they really cite it? You can scan a "cited" letter by GEPIK and put it online for us to see? I think they are pulling one on you.
I normally finish at 4:30. So if they don't want to pay me for 5 extra hours, I come 5 hours late the next day. I don't negotiate, I don't wait for an excuse. I tell them how it is with me, and if they don't like it, I will move on.
If you want to get taken advantage of, it's your choice. |

Well the vice principal was going to double check for me. According to them they usually get notices about this before hand and GEPIK didn't indicate to pay me. They even encouraged me to contact Dain Bae.
I wanted to hear if anyone else had the same experience. I'm gonna go find my contract now, then contact Dain tomorrow. |

| I got overtime for a speaking contest that lasted until 9pm. 30,000 won per hour. I had to register my index finger on a fingerprint scanner. After 4pm, any overtime I accrue requires me to use the fingerprint scanner. |

Not even Korean teachers? You'd be surprised what they get and don't tell the dumb foreigner about. |

You're never "forced" to do anything. They saw you cave in on the singing bit, so figured you were a mark so they didn't have to pay you. |

WHAT? Why would you let them do this? First year teacher or not, I would never sing a song, nor would anyone force me to. And I certainly wouldn't stay until 9 PM.
This is how you handle such things. (Real-life example).
Korean Teacher: "Oh we are having a school festival on May 30th."
Me: "That's nice."
KT: "Will you be there?"
Me: "Hold on a minute please" ( checks calendar) "Looks like that is a Saturday."
KT: "Yes it is a Saturday."
Me: "Sorry I've made other plans."
KT: "But we will pay you overtime."
Me: "Sorry, but I can't change these plans. You should have given me more advance notice."
As for not paying you overtime, someone is pulling a fast one on you methinks.
But be aware that even if you do eventually get OT that you will probably not get the amount for teaching overtime (20,000) won per hour but the amount for non-teaching hours (6000) won per hour. Contractually they can do that.

I usually see teachers preparing for these things by training students for weeks and in some cases months....Your "request" is to merely show up....sometimes they ask me to visit a soccer match....no pay!...My co-teachers have to help coach them and and feed them and then monitor all the games....
If only I could squeeze my school for some overtime pay for the soccer match they asked me to visit...  |

I haven't heard of teachers getting OT money to stay around for a school festival. At least in my school not all teacher's stick around to watch all the festivities. A good quarter of them make a secret get away during the night hours.
But, teacher's definitely get OT for judging those dang english contests, if it goes beyond 4 or 5pm. |

Now you chalk it up to a learning experience and don't bother giving up your free time ever again at this school. |

| i always factor in that usually my school feeds me a good dinner and gets me wasted. thats enough overtime for me. |
