Any suggestions for some nice little spots in Gangwon-do? I'm thinking Chiaksan or Odaesan, been to Seoraksan already, any other ideas?

I like Samcheok as far as Korean towns go and it has a nice beach. Mureung valley, near Donghae is supposed to be very beautiful, but I haven't been yet. If you're looking for more ambitious hiking, Tada(?)san is visible from Samcheok and Donghae... I would guess it would be a challenging hike with commanding views from the top.

Yeah, I live 20km down the road from the caves, and I thought Hwansungul was worth a Saturday to visit, but just barely. The hike up is nice, if you can ignore the 70 decibel pop music blaring out of the speakers every 10m. I hear you can hike up above the caves, and I'm sure that's nice too.

what are good places to live in gangwon-do if a person needs certain medications? also, isn't too rural but cold? nobody wants to be in a rural place and there's not another expat around to help out.

You can get meds in any town. I live in a town of maybe 5000 and there are now 6 foreigners living here full time and several more that come down for work or for part of the week. So unless the town is really small, you shouldn't be totally alone. Beyond that, look at a map, lonely planet, or one of the many blogs being written from Gangwon-do. Click on the www button under this for mine.

Summer in Taebaek is less humid due to the elevation - make your way up to the top of the mountain alongside a gorgeous and cooling river - join us for "Cool Cinema" in August. This is an huge event where kids and families
gather to watch newer movies out in the cool evening air of the mountains on a huge movie screen. There is limited tent camping below the Provincial Park gates and I am told it is permit only.

KORAIL to Taebaek...bus 33 goes up to Taebaeksan Provincial Park approx every 45 minutes...or taxi it for around 6,000 Won. There are also numerous places to stay near the station or walk ten minutes towards Hwangi Pond for more upscale spots.
