Hey I was just curious how EPIK vacation works.

I know you get like 20/21 days of vacation... But is it in like two chunks or can you do like 4, 5 day vacations?

Any EPIK teachers who have gone through the year and vacation time, give me some input?

how did you use your vacation time?

I am starting epik in August, and am just curious to learn what I can.

thanks!

It depends on where you are. In gangwon-do, where I am, we get 3 weeks in the winer, 2 in the summer, and an addition 2 if we renew our contracts. I believe for other provinces its the same with just a week or two less. I'm pretty sure its always in blocks.

The 2009 contract stipulates 18 days. 10 in the winter, and 8 in the summer. For the summer, I would jsut two days unpaid and add the extra weekend....unless theres a red day or two in there to fill out the week.

Well no Very Happy

your contract says you get 18-21days including weekends total.
so really about 1 week twice a year.

However, schools can give you more. Very Happy BUT! they can decide to subtract it from you pay later Shocked If they so choose.

I know people who GOT lots of vacation with no issues and I know people who lost thier severance becuase of vacation day deductions after the fact.

Honestly, vacation issues is why half the old timers moved on or even to hagwons or uni. crazy huh? Wink

Again, it really depends on your school.

None of the people in my area had to desk warm, and when the school had an event that didn't include us, or involved classes being canceled, they'd tell us to stay home. Our provincial camp and school camps totaled 2 weeks in the winter, so we got the rest of the time off.

The problem is you will not know ahead of time about extra vacation, so it's impossible to book travel, but still wonderful nonetheless.

It's a total crap shoot. If you get a strict school they could make sure to it that you only have the vacation days in your contract and nothing more.

My school never mentioned extra days off being unpaid, but one can not expect to know things in advance here... fingers crossed for severance.

These 18-21 days don't include Korean national holidays correct?

Completely depends on your school. The bare min is stated in your contract, but I had 2 months in winter and will get another 1 1/2 in summer. I am at a high school, though. HS kids hate camps.... one of the few perks of HS.

So are the days standard for all schools like "all public schools are closed Dec 25-Jan 5 and thats when you take your vacation"? My friend and I are going together and hopefully it wont be a problem to get the same vacation time off so we can travel together.

Maybe, maybe not. The exact dates of what are commonly called 'winter vacation' and 'summer vacation' (these terms refer to the school, not to your vacation) are decided by each individual principal.

Are you totally confused yet? Wink

Haha I've been confused since the moment I decided to go to Korea! Their policies are so vague!
