So, I live in Geoje, not Seoul. I pretty much just have the regular flu or something, actually more like a sore throat, fever, and fatigue.

Anyway, the school administrator just got this mysterious call, and after hearing my name thrown around the room a few times, one of the teachers with some English came over and asked me if I felt sick or had been around anyone who'd been to America lately. I have NO voice, which looks bad, so I wrote down that I just have a cold with a sore throat and no voice. He said "they" are checking up on all of the foreigners in Korea, hence the phone call and questions.

Anyway, I was going to go to the hospital for my sore throat and fever, but I'm afraid they are going to quarantine me or something bat sh** crazy like that because I am American and displaying flu-like symptoms.

Is this totally irrational, or should we foreigners expect this sort of thing in health clinics today?

had the same thing as you last week in that I completely lost my voice and took a day off .....though I arrived before this whole outbreak so not much of a big deal was made of it though a quiet/sneaky mention of it was said but not directly to me Very Happy.....about the hospital? Well you're being a bit irrrational. To be honest you don't even need to go to hospital, just take some lemon/honey water/gargle salt water and you'll be fine after a day or 2 days.

Koreans go to hospitals for everything minor including the sniffles.

Oh, that's just peachy. And improbable.

I don't know if I'd say that's entirely irrational, and I'm referring both to your worries AND to the Korean 'medical constabulary' wanting to put foreigners with the flu in lockdown. Or at least making double damn sure what kind of flu they have before releasing them back into the general population. Twisted Evil

You have good reason to be paranoid. They've already locked down a number of foreigners who might have been exposed to the virus. If you go to a hospital with flu symptome, you will likely be quarrantined until they can figure out exactly what you've got.

I can see where the OP is coming from on being concerned and fearful, becuase it's not normal to have the flu at this time of the year in the Northern hemisphere. It's almost June! Flu and cold season typically runs from late November to February or early March in northern temperate climates while it would roughly run from May to July or August in the South such as New Zealand.

OP, just go get checked out, becuase if it is H1N1 or whatever that really bad flu is called, it could kill you if you don't get help. Better to get quaranteened and treated if you do have the unthinkable as to be able to go home again than to suffer your last fate on some almost unknown island of Korea.

I don't think that you have anything to worry about. Go to the Dr. and get it checked out. My roommate also had the same symptoms for around a month. She went to multiple Doctors, and was never quarantined. They just gave her medicine and sent her home. We are in Seoul, though. I don't know what they are like where you live.

Bring a small kit of your needed toiletries and whatnot... if they do hold you for a week, who cares! It's a week off! Bring a notebook computer, too.

Do you like big, inter-muscular jabs in the ass? Because that will probably be one of the first items of business.

What are you talking about? Your voice sounds fine to me! Just kidding. When I came back from the US about three weeks ago with my wife and 20 month old son, we came through Incheon and they were checking everyone, taking temperatures and all. Unfortunately we bought plane tickets and went on vacation right in the middle of the flu outbreak. Anyway, to make a long story short, after we got back, the government called my wife about five times to see how we were doing. I told her it's ridiculous to think the government can keep in touch with EVERYONE who comes through Incheon's gates, but I guess they're trying.

I have symptoms and I'm one of the quarantined folk. There aren't any shots.. Just a swab of the back of the throat and possibly tamiflu. If you go to the hospital, bring your computer, toiletries and a bag of clothes. It takes about a day to get the results, so expect to be locked down during the interim.

If you're negative, you'll be sent home. The Koreans have their hands full with this quarantine, we're apparently the first type of mass quarantine they've handled so the last thing they want is to add to this group. Many of the group are first-timers to Korea, so it's pretty funny how freaked out they get over normal "Korean" stuff (doctors not communicating, etc.) It actually isn't bad at all (except that I'm sick..) They order food for us every meal.. pizza, chicken, korean, spaghetti.. pretty much whatever we ask for. The staff has been very nice and apologetic. I'm in a room designed for four, but I have it to myself.. I have cable TV, internet and a great view of the mountains.
