So I was set to fly to Korea in two days when I get a call from the recruiter saying the school had canceled my contract. Apparently the guy that was suppose to be leaving changed his mind and re-upped. This obviously puts me in a pretty difficult situation as I have quit my job and I have no source of income or housing. Am I screwed? or is there anything I can do (from Canada) to seek compensation?

You've got a contract, so I guess you're entitled to something. But to claim any compensation, you'd have to be in SK, wouldn't you?

Good luck, not sure what you can do, if anything.

Wow~~
But in a way, if you're boss can do this to you think of all the crap he could've pulled once you got there.
If you have all of your paperwork together, I would just find a new job. They're so plentiful. Tell them you could be on the next plane at the drop of a hat and I'm sure the offers will flood in.
As for what to do about the screwy knucklehead boss, I would tell the Korean Embassy or consulate in your country and see if they can advise you on any legal action you could take.
Anyway, I'm sorry this happened to you but I think it was for the best and you're going to be just fine.

No problem. You can just find a different job in about a day or two. You are outside the country and you will get tons of offers if you tell them you are ready to start ASAP.
As long as you didn't get the visa processed, you really have nothing to worry about.

Isn't your Visa somewhat dependent on your employer? I remember filling out information on my Visa application that was specific to my employer and now a lot of that info would be inaccurate.

Your visa is indeed tied to the contract (employer) that you sent to the consulate for issuance. I would at the very least enquire about reimbursement from the school at question for those fees. I would also give the consulate a call and tell them about the situation.

find a couch to surf, sign up with a temp agency, find a new recruiter and wait for the right job...one that you have verified the location of using Google maps, and determined the conditions of by talking to other teachers there.

DON'T take just anything because you are desparate. Korea isn't the easiest place to adjust to and if you aren't careful, you will end up at some hagwon in the middle of nowhere with your boss frowning at you through the window and making your students too nervous to speak.

Don't feel bad about not coming over at this exact moment... they are starting to quarantine foreigners arriving in Korea for teaching jobs. It's all over the forum.

I certainly won't be jumping on the first job offer to come my way and I'm confident I will find another job. In fact, I already have an interview set-up for a school in the same neighborhood. I created this thread because this school completely ignored the contract they had offered me, thus putting me in a crappy situation.

Just curious if anyone has gone through this before and if there is anything I can do to receive compensation for my troubles

Hard enough to receive compensation for troubles" while in Korea undergoing serious problems, OP, let alone from afar for a contract being cancelled. Just a harsh reality, sorry.

I figured as much, but you never know. I got your PM, although I don't have the min. number of posts to reply back to you. I have a fairly specific locale of where I want to teach in and I would rather be at a private school, that being said feel free to send me your email via PM and I will let you know mine.

Be prepared to sit in quarantine for a few days when you do arrive. Foreigners are not welcomed right now in korea. We bring disease to their lands. Shocked

This country is a mental case. Of course they're over reacting and they see the problem as a foreigner problem from a xenophobic perspective. They can act really warm and friendly and when they do it is because they don't like you or have lies or a cover up regarding you. OP, I bet they acted sweet and friendly as can be over the phone knowing damn well they had issues from the get go. When they act neutral, but not friendly, with no incidents, concerns, nor feedbacks, then you're probably wanted, liked, and everything is going OK. I'm ready to go quite soon as I don't want to get involved in a nastier surprise than being paid late or lied to about who hid my shoes.

If all of your documents are ready, and I'm guessing they are because you were ready to come to Korea, it should be pretty easy to find a job. Hagwons often have jobs that need to be filled quickly so people with all of the documents get pushed to the front of the list.
