For anybody in Daejeon or hereabouts who cares, Daejeon's premier expat lounge bar, the Bad Apple in Walpyongdong is closing this Saturday night.
As the most laid-back bar in Daejeon it will be sorely missed, not least because it has for the last six months been the home of the phenomenal cultural/literary event that is Word Up, which is currently looking for new digs in the same area.
Come on down if you can on Saturday night to say 'seeya eh' to Paul and his wife Seung-hye. Free finger food (whatever that is) will be served but the kitchen will otherwise be closed. |

that is a real shame. Paul is a nice guy. Not many foreigner bars left in Daejeon now... |

Good. I've never experienced a more miserable time in Korea than the night I went to the Bad Apple. Can you say clique? I sure can, having spent two sour hours surrounded by fatsos with hot Korean girlfriends.
Rotten to the core. |

Can you or anyone here elaborate and give more details about what Word Up is all about? I'm thinking about incorporating something like it into an establishment that is in development in Daegu. |

Word Up is a spoken word event that I have been organising here in Daejeon for the past six months, having pursued the same form of entertainment provision in Australia for various arts festivals and licensed venues around Perth, WA.
It is essentially an open mic night held on the first Tuesday of every month where people get up and spruik poetry, their own and the work of others, play musical instruments, sing unaccompanied or just rant! Usually there is a wide variety of guests whose words range from comedy to heavy subjects, but the main idea seems to be diversity. We also webcast the shows on www.daejeonweb.com
We have had very successful nights mostly, with one or two less well patronised events. I was paid 50,000 Won per event by the generous bar owner, although he was definitely earning a good whack from the deal on what would normally be a very slow night. We averaged between 30 and forty patrons on a Tuesday night, which is an achievement in itself, but if you want to see a really well organised, professional event, get down to Busan for the (less regular) Poetry Plus events at the Monk Jazz Bar. See www.pusanweb.com for more details.
I would certainly be happy to come down to Daegu to perform so let me know how you go and PM me when it happens. All the best, Plastic B. |

The problem lies not so much with the Bad Apple, but with your jealousy and ignorance ~ the reason you can't get a 'hot Korean girlfriend'.
BTW, I'm neither a 'fatso' nor do I have a Korean girlfriend, she's Indonesian, but I imagine you could not discern the difference as no doubt 'they are all the same' to you. |

I think buddy bradley was commenting on the in-group mentality there, and saying he didn't have a good time because he didn't feel welcome. Why the hostility/racist accusations, Plastic B? (I've never been to this bar, but I'm starting to see why he didn't feel welcome... )
p.s. "...nor do I have a Korean girlfriend, she's Indonesian" Did you mean for this to come off as funny as it does? |

I dunno, I suppose I'm just sick of the level of immaturity on this site when it comes to losers making crap comments like Mr Bradley's dig at the Bad Apple. Maybe he didn't find the bar very friendly because he doesn't know how to make friends. In reality, the Bad Apple was a very relaxed bar with a great host, in a non-threatening, welcoming atmosphere. Occasionally it was a little lame, but isn't everywhere now and then. |

Buddy, even if you aren't a racist loser, you still write very crap posts... and yeah, I know I'm just adding to the mountainous piles of immature dung that accumulates here. |

My general take on expat bars is that they are best avoided after you have your feet on the ground. Sure it can be a great way for a newbie to make some friends and learn about Korea, but outside of the first two year newbie stint, thier is so much more out there than hitting on Korean babes in foreign entertainment ghettos or learning of the new faces fresh off the plane. I think the most important thing here is to have some language skills that can take you away from this dependancy. Korea can be a pressure cooker in some ways, and having all this emotion come together at the foreigner place, can lead to some twisted dealings. Make some Korean friends elsewhere, it is better for your happiness. |

you make some good points weatherman, but bear in mind that not everyone plans on spending the rest of their lives in korea (as you appear to from your past posts)
For people here for a year or two, getting out and speaking english and not having to explain everything 3 times can help you stay sane |

That's quite strange. I met almost everyone I know in Daejeon at Bad Apple. It's the one place I have been to Daejeon (though I haven't been to them all) where people would include you in conversation if you are alone in the place. I have never seen Paul, the owner, make anyone feel anything but welcome.
You didn't get beaten up by a girl again there did you Buddy?
