I was approached at work today and told to be careful etc, and to tell the other foreigners as well. I told her that we are all at equal risk, and actually more Koreans have tested positive for it than foreigners.

Honestly the mind boggles...

Yeah, it's a bit of a pain. From a business standpoint I can understand where the school is coming from. Not that I believe I will contract this flu, but if there is that 1,000,000 : 1 chance that I do get it, the school could be in some serious trouble. I guess I'm more upset about the whole idea of this "pandemic". Death toll finally hit 100 today. Not to dismiss those unfortunates who either have, have had, or have lost someone to this flu, it's simply ridiculous that there is so much hype about it.

And honestly, it's not like I'm traveling to North America! It's Cambodia. Think I'll just sit down with my boss and our head foreign teacher and try to have a talk.

I need to chill out and watch some "Flight of the Conchords".

interestingly...since i've arrived to korea almost a year ago, i haven't caught a cold. i used to get sick 3-4 times a year... and yes, i have been eating kimchi on a regular basis. so as far as i'm concerned, i'm a believer in the power of the pickled cabbage. bring on the swine!

I have your solution- ask your boss and co-teachers how much kimchi the average Korean person eats in a day, and promise them you'll eat double that amount the entire time you're in Cambodia Laughing

When I was in Korea in the mid-eighties, a lot of Koreans said that kimchi protected them from getting Aids (Aids was just becoming big news at the time). Hmmm...

too bad it was actually western ignorance on the disease that resulted in the explosive rapid infection rates in the states and europe in the 80's.

I will say that eating kimchi increases your immunity against some diseases, as basically garlic = good.

Maybe we in the west should have eaten more kimchi...it might have made us more enlightened and counteracted the spread of the disease. Hmmm...

The original intent of this thread is not to bash Korea/Korean. I have pulled and edited posts to keep them clean.

Please refrain from turning this thread into another one where you defame Korea/Korean. Doing so will mean that this thread will be permanently pulled.

I have been here 3 years, had one cold.
Problem with digsydinner's theory is that I don't eat Kimchi either!!!!!

All the foreign staff were called into a meeting to be told about the CDI situation (closing down for X number of days/weeks) and we were asked if we had been out drinking or whether we felt sick. I have heard of no such meeting with the Korean staff.

What I don't get is the logic: if a foreign teacher were sick, that foreigner would not come to work, but if a Korean teacher were sick, he/she would suck it up and still come to work. Which of these is wiser, when you're dealing with a contagious virus?
