OK-I admit I seldom read or post anything here anymore since I've been back in Canada a few years but after all the happenings of the last week I expected to see a lot of concerns on the board -ESPECIALLY WITH WHATS GOING ON IN THE NORTH but no, just the same old whinging about jobs, commiserating about daily life with whining students and tiny apartments and the size of womens' breasts.

I mean WTF? Is no one concerned with the missile tests and the fact that Kim Jong Il is about to declare war on SK? Or has the media here completely blown everything out of proportion? Yes, I saw lots of huffin and puffin by the little tyrant while I was there, but I think he's dying now and wants to go out with a bang-literally

3 Korean students in our school who were supposed to go back home this weekend have been told by their parents to stay in Canada until they can figure out what's going on. I've got the emails and the cheques for home stay and tuition extensions already.

Jesus H Christ folks- be safe!!

About five years ago a friend and I were discussing what it would take for us to finally up and leave Korea. We'd both spent a few years here by then and had settled pretty comfortably into our Asian routines. My friend said: a North Korean nuclear test. We were both agreed on that. We'd leave if that happened.

Then KJI and co. exploded their bomb in 2006. Then another on Sunday. My friend left two years ago. I'm still here. Maybe I'm missing something. How casual can you be? I'm absorbed in a job search and read the NK news with interest but not much attachment.

I have some dim memories of nuke drills in school in Canada in the seventies, ducking under the desk, head between your knees, the DEW Line salvation, all that. Now I'm older and wiser, have visited both Hiroshima and Nagasaki and know the desk won't help me worth a damn when the nukes come raining down.

It's a complete paper tiger. We're talking about a blight of a country full of peasants. A country that can't even feed itself, let alone maintain a working nuclear weapons program. Any kind of attack would be suicide for them, and they know it. It's all about appearances, and that's it.

They could cause some major damage to Seoul, but it would be limited to that IMO.

Just because an attack would be suicidal doesn't mean it won't happen.

Suicide is kind of normal here.

Also: when a parent whacks the whole family here, they don't call it a quadruple murder; it's a 'family suicide.'

Even a paper tiger can be a problem, if it's on fire and running around inside your house.

Yes, the old man is about to croak and he's lookin' to go out bad. I hope things simmer down when he kicks the bucket soon and don't lead to a terrorism incident of a bomb landing in Seoul or someplace in Korea or Japan or worse.... North America. We're talking about North Korea and Kim Jong-Il who now has the hardware due to receiving monies from South Korea trying to help their other half as well as drug money. It's been known they grow poppy and maryjane up there. I wouldn't doubt if they produce meth to make money. Kim Jong-Il would do anything to get money, oil, and hardware to fight the world. He's our modern day Hitler, but worse. Good thing he's contained in his half of Korea. He's put himself in check with the world.

I only wish South Korea would take a stand to take their other half back and set things right rather than being hush hush pussies about it. I'm all for Korea to go to war to seek justice and correction of what is terribly wrong, but not for America to get involved as that would piss off China and Russia leading to WW3. This is a Korean issue and should be dealt with domestically by South Korea. If he attacks NA or Japan or if America gets militarily involved, then it's WW3 as China and Russia have conflicting interests, a severely very complex situation no one wants.

The situation is already appearing grim with Kim Jong-Il declaring today he is abandoning the truce that ended the Korean war over 50 years ago. This is deeply saddening and disappointing as this was supposed to be about progressing to reunification as the Korean people and the world wished for. I hate to think of the Americans AND Ethiopians who died fighting for Korea was in vain. Come on South Korea and take a stand! It's time to bat as you're now standing on home plate; not America.

I came to Korea to do something I love and and also to enjoy a nice quality of life. This has been an extremely "educational" year for me. Thank you very much for having me as your "guest". (although we don't treat our guests back in my country quite the way I was treated here, but fair enough...I came to your country and not vice versa) I think it is about time to turn in my 30 days notice. I will write here what a lot of people might be thinking but aren't putting down in black and white. Hey, the won isn't worth much....the neighbors to the north aren't all that friendly...why am I here and not in one of the many other countries around the world where I can earn a living teaching ESL? I wish the best for each and every one of you.
