So fill me in? What's the appeal?
Only 10 years? So MMORPG is still an infant. |

It really became huge with the release of everquest back in 1999. Although there were several other games that we popular well before that (such as ultima online). And the genre itself truely dates back to the 1980's
As far as computer game genres go I dont think you can really call it an infant, since computer games have only been around for what 40-50 years tops. But in the whole game genre (spanning over 5,000 years) yes it is an infant.
Over the past 5 years it has been dominated by World of Warcraft which has over 10million subscribers worldwide (half of which are in asia).
The appeal is that its a game where you have to constantly interact with other people from all over the world and there is no conclusion to the game. The game constantly evolves and changes month after month. After you kill the final boss, you can kill him again and again, until an even better boss is created. Its also a game that takes many months to reach the final content and be able to play with the best players around. |

So evolving content, community, and bang bang shoot em up is the appeal?
10M subscribers is impressive, I wonder if the free-to-play model will take off?
I'm not really into the fantasy gnomes, wizards and trolls type of shit, I wonder what other genres are catching on? |

I've considered picking up an MMO since I've moved here. I started with EQ, then WoW, Vanguard, and finally with Age of Conan, which I quit fairly quickly.
Has anyone played Warhammer Online? I've been wondering if it's any good. |

Yes I have, and it was quite a bit of fun. I only played for about 2 months, but I played a lot in those 2 months. It has a fairly good mix of pve vs pvp. While I was playing, the pvp was sometimes incredibly fun - some of the best pvp I've ever had - and sometimes very boring.
If you're into fantasy rpg, I'd say it's worth your money. |
