I read many articles in both Korean newspapers and Dave's ESL about the Negativity the "foreigners" have toward Korea. All the complaining and the racism, pushing, puking, spitting, non-shaving...etc. I've got one comment about the negativity:
If it seems that the Korean conversations and boards are all negative, then maybe there's a reason. Don't complain about the negativity until you've been in Korea for several years. If you have anything other than an E-2 visa, then you are not allowed to complain about the negativity of those who must live in Korea under the E-2s rules and laws.

I am voting to negate the existence of this thread for the following reasons:
1. OP seems to believe that articles are being written for Dave's ESL
2. OP put "foreigners" in quotes, as if living in a country other than your home country could qualify you as something other than a foreigner.
3. Sentence #2 is not a sentence.
4. No one, as far as I know, has stated that "Korean conversations... are all negative."
5. OP goes on to inform us as to when it is OK to complain about the negativity. I mean, c'mon, that's just straight Tom-foolery.[mod edit]
6. I believe the views and opinions expressed by OP are unintelligible at best. |

I love how grammar is picked apart here. It's a damn forum, it's not work, I don't care if my grammar sucks when I write here.
I do love how some people have nothing better to do than comment on it.

Well, certainly, many people experience some form of culture shock in another country. It does help if a country's immigration office and the proprietors of business that higher them treat them in a decent manner.
Oftentimes, that's not the case, and oftentimes it is the case. Thus, you will have a large number of people who will have grievances in the said country. I am a fan of this country, but I can, certainly, say that
I am non-plussed by the incompetence of Korean Immigration, but I do love my current job, my students are stellar, in the main.
It can seem rather arduous for many an occidental resident of this said country to feel acclimatized to the conditions he or she has to deal with.
When dealing with the authorities, you find yourself dealing with many people who are working in rather easy occupations, but, yet, they don't seem to have consistent answers. Perhaps, they are not interested in doing their jobs in a dilligent manner across-the-board.
I sounded so stuffy, didn't I?
[In Korea, you must learn to unlearn what you have learned]

If you find a job or place sucks whether it's a state in the US or a job in Korea, change it ASAP. If you've got a hagwon boss from hell, then there are many planes at the airport and airlines wanting you to buy a plane ticket. |

| When people ask me the difference between teaching in Korea and Taiwan I tell them teachers in Taiwan seem to be genuinely happy; teachers in Korea always seem to complain. Not saying one is better than the other. Just what I've observed. And, no, I don't think this applies to everyone. |

Korea is a uniquely unhappy country, but natives usually bottle it up when the unhappiness is caused by an elder or superior. All these bad vibes rub off, filter down, etc.
That said, you do get a lot of Hemmingway wannabes/rock star cases here who haven't dealt with a real job before and expect to be literally and figuratively blown at every opportunity. |

Would you say the Tawianese are also happier, on average, than Koreans?
I mean the country does have a high suicide rate, and the former president jumped to his death, unfortunately, which made his guard look bad who went on an errand for him. Then again, the weather is nicer in Taiwan, so maybe the folks there are laid back. People are affected by the place somewhat. It's not simply foreigners not adjusting, but one place being harder to adjust to by more people in one place than the other folks in the other place. Do people often get cheated as much in Taiwan? Is the government stronger over there to where not getting your pension is not so common? If so, then people would have less reasons to complain about there. |

And to OP and the rest of you fascinating, intricate world travelers, whenever Korea or life in general gets you down, just close your eyes, count to ten and ask yourself what John Steinbeck (or, as was mentioned, Ernest Hemingway) would do: get drunk, piss people off, get into fights, womanize, hit rock bottom, gamble, follow whatever passionate inkling your vice-ridden soul desires but do it with some style and do it with some respect for the English language.
Joking, of course. Never get into a fight in Korea.

Well, they get cheated just as much, there is no pension or severance pay, or free apartment. So the job benefits here are much better. They don't even get paid vacation usually. It's unpaid. Almost everyone works hourly. The kids and coworkers can be just as bad as here - or as good as here depending on your experience. The weather can be oppressively hotter and more humid than Korea, and probably rains more, too. However, they have access to nice simple things in life, like pot, etc. The drinking culture there isn't as heavy as here either, so while you will enjoy nights out drunk or drinking, it's not like that's all there is to do and you feel pushed into it. I think Taiwanese are smarter, too, in that they do a good job pretending to like you, even if they don't. Koreans often don't hide their feelings. Some Koreans even appear to hate your guts, when actually they're interested in you and wanna get to know you. That confuses you since other koreans look like and actually do hate your guts. But, I dunno... Foreigners there are just more chilled out and relaxed. They live in a crowded, dirty, polluted, corrupt, HOT, Asian country, too. Sometimes even more so than here. But they just seem happier on average. Must be the pot. |
