Enough politics. I want to know practicalities. What do we DO if there's an attack? I have an emergency bag packed, but where do I go? I'm assuming I'll be on foot, or on stolen bicycle. Options:
--head for the Canadian embassy on bicycle
--head to the basement of my building, hide out bunker-style
--head for the nearest subway station, hide out bunker-style
--head for the airport in Incheon (how? hitch a ride? bike?)
--stay in my apartment, hope for the best

I'm in Mokdong. Seriously, I would love to hear other people's thoughts on this. If there's an attack, what's the plan? I know there's a small chance of real trouble. But it's good to be somewhat prepared, no?

I seriously doubt the situation will escalate...BUT

If I lived around Seoul or Daegu...I'd grab the nearest moped/motorcycle and head to the very southern tip of Korea. NK has missiles that can reach that far but the majority are pointed at Seoul.

Also I wouldn't count on the news or any embassy to be quick about warning everyone. A good indicator would be if you have a friend in the US Armed Forces. They will most likely know before everyone else.

If you are that afeared, go home now.

If you honestly think that the NORKS are going to drop a bomb on Korea, the will drop it on Seoul.

After they drop that bomb, they will have about 5 minutes of existance left.

Should they choose to go with conventional warfare, i.e. no nukes, then they have about, from what I have heard, 2 weeks at most of shelling Seoul. Sure they have a huge regiment, but that won't go too far considering they don't have the armement that SK (ahem) the USA has. So, they start shelling Seoul, then the 52,000 American that are here start pounding on NK, plus the 100,000 plus SKs that are active right now. Then, SK calls in all their reserves. Remember, all SK men had to train for 2 years. So now you have a couple million ready join the ranks. Plus, SK, like I mentioned, is well armed. The US has made sure of that. Then the US brings in all its Pacific fleet within a couple days, so add another 100,000 well armed soldiers.

If Kim Jong crazy nuts decides that this is his last chance for a moment in history, he and his country are going to get blasted to pieces, as none of the World community will stand by them. Sure China says that they are their big brother. But, China isn't ready to go up against the world for WWIII just yet.

So, if you even think there is a chance, run away now, cause once it starts happening, there won't be much of an exit plan for you. The Canadian Embassy will get their VIPS out first. We are last on the totem pole.

The title of the OP is exactly kind of paranoia, fear and panic the North Korean regime wants to to spread in the civilized world. They wont do anything, they know what will happen if they do, and Kim Thong probably wants to preserve his bloodline and knows whats coming if he tries anything stupid. Even China wont save his attention starved self now. Hes only got a few years left so hes acting out to get attention from a world that would barely give a crap about him if he didn't have nukes. Plus it keeps attention of his starving, poor , Korean populous away from him and makes them think the military is actually protecting them from something . It is a sabre rattling ploy, nothing will happen, just that his own people will forget that they are starving and what a horrible atrocious leader he is for a moment.

If Truman would have listened to MacArthur we wouldn't be in this situation.

This is an internal matter and not worth one drop of American blood, especially after the demonstrated gratefulness of Koreans, i.e., yankee go home, F'ing USA, beef protests, etc.

If nothing else you guys should stock up on maybe a month's worth of water and canned food. It couldn't hurt.

Why would you go to the Canadian embassy, even if you're Canadian? In the event of anything bad happening you'd best be in with the Americans or head South. I mean in a situation in which bags of food and survival gear are packed, it would me that stuff has gone really really bad. The Canadian embassy (or Kiwi or Aussie or British..) embassy will be no use. You wanta be in with the guys with the guns and ships and planes and helicopters, not seal-clubbers and peace keepers.

Anyway, I have no bags packed and no 'evacuation plan'. Not worried about Nork rumblings. Silly to worry. On the off-chance there is ever a real war again everyone in Seoul will be toast pretty much. If you live outside of Seoul then your embassy will be gone anyway. Head to Mokpo or Yeosu or Ulsan or Wando or Pohang or Busan and steal a boat or hitch a lift^^

I like how many of your escape plans involve stealing a bicycle/moped as if they are just going to be lying around and the 30 million Koreans you live with would never have similar thoughts. Laughing

agreed. Americans are raised on action movies (me included)....

i figure i'll jump from the burning building and land in a fruit truck.

then rig a smoke screen to cover me while I steal a porsche off of a flatbed truck.

then i will use kung fu to pay for my soft drink at the 711.

then i'll rescue some hot russian lady that used to be my enemy.

then i'll deliver the antidote to the embassy just in time.

then i'll eat a sandwich.

then i'll meet up with my partner who got shot in the shoulder but will be ok.

then i'll say, "next time, why don't I let YOU drive...."

then we laugh. and freeze frame. and credits roll over 80's power pop.

Probably another reason for all the expats in Korea to starting buying bicycles eh? Very Happy

p.s. Janny. Please don't steal my bike. It's been stolen once in Korea already.

Us Kiwis will smear our faces with Marmite, hide behind a convenient sheep and throw Jaffas at the NK marauders. After our victory we'll dance naked around the afore-mentioned sheep (by now kindly roasted by KJI's little nuke), do a haka then send our victorious pear-shaped womenfolk and stout, ruddy-faced men folk up North to help rebuild the schools.

As I said, another reason to buy your own bike. And while we're at it, make it a fairly decent quality mountainbike that'll handle the cross-country epic of a life time. Start plotting out a route to Busan following a mountainous route across farmland, through forest and down isolated rural valley roads. Join the weekend mtbk rides to get fit and maybe Jerry might even let you hide out in the BRT. If nothing else you'll be able to get quietly drunk and eat corn chips while gazing out towards the mushroom cloud hanging over downtown Seoul.

This is perfect and exactly what I thought. Of all the threads I have been reading and talking to friends, it seems that everyone has the same idea. It's going to be SOOO easy to steal a bike/motorbike.

Better to invest in one now and pray you actually know how to ride if thats your only plan.

Exactly what I've been thinking and saying (see my posts above). Buy a bike, start going cycling in the weekends and see the countryside. then, even if the bombs don't fall you'll end up with shapely legs and a bum you can crack walnuts with Very Happy
