I visited there once. It seemed appalling; no Korean teachers and from what I remember the foreign teachers had to do everything including deal with the parents and teach four 80 minute lessons each day. |

Hi - this may be too late to be helpful for you. I recently worked for SLP Busan in Haeundae, so I can only speak for that school. It was an unpleasant year, and I don't recommend working for them. They pay on time, but that's about it - very unprofessional and disorganized, do not defend their teachers at all from their rich paying mothers, and I've had to fight tooth and nail to get my income tax refund from them. It's been pretty frustrating. I suggest you look elsewhere. |

SLP can only market themselves towards middle-class mothers who wish they were rich...so they are demanding and unreasonable even though they have no concept of what a good school is...which is why they foolishly chose SLP. Their materials are poorly written and usually stretched thin, their supplementary materials are of poor quality or non-existent. This is a franchise that appeals to wanna-be gangsters and ignorant folks with no business skills who think hagwons will provide a lot of quick, easy profit.
I would encourage everyone to avoid this franchise at all costs. |

Sure...
READ THE CONTRACT. It is all spelled out in there.
NO settlement allowance. (300k won in a PS)
You WILL teach twice as long as a PS teacher for the same or lower wage.
-21 classes of 90 minutes per week compared to 22 classes of 40 minutes.
You WILL get less than 1/2 as many paid holidays.
10 working days per calendar year compared to 21 working days per year. PS teachers also get the EXTRA 2 weeks if they re-sign AND get the airfare as well EVERY YEAR.
You will have LESS support in and out of the classroom and have fewer resources to draw on (experience talking here).
You PROBABLY WON'T have NHIC medical (with the booklet) and be assured that you WON'T get your tax refund and WON'T be enrolled in the national pension plan (NPS).
Yup... it's all in the contract.

It is one of the WORST schools to work for in Busan!
They have 20 foreign teachers and half are always pulling a midnight run!
Ask anyone that lives in Busan and they will tell you the same! |

Just got off the phone with SLP Haeundae Busan and am so sad to find this thread, lol. It all seemed so wonderful! I thought it was nearly impossible for me to find a job in Busan at this point. I could definitely tell there was a lack of focus during my interview, however. My interviewer had to have me hold at one point so she could speak to students passing by and I could hear children playing in the background the entire time.
I was surprised to learn that she had been there 3 years though. Can anyone give me any specific experience with this school in this location? I know this whole thread is basically about how I should avoid it like the plague, but I would be really interested in some specific accounts of WHY it actually was less than wonderful. I would love to know, for example, what was so disorganized about the school from day to day? My interviewer said that foreign teachers DO NOT have to deal with parents, that there are counselors that act as go-betweens. I mean, I obviously take what she is telling me with a grain of salt, but I guess I was just hoping for some more detailed information on the downsides to this school. Thank you! |
