Hello all!

I've seen a few topics on distance masters degrees from the U.S., the U.K., and Australia, but I haven't seen any from Canada. I'm a Canadian and I'm interested in doing an MA part-time while working in Korea and I'd prefer to do it at a Canadian university. Specifically, I'd like to do a masters in Education or Linguistics... I'm really not sure yet.

Has anyone done an MA from a Canadian university whilst living in Korea?

Also, if Canada doesn't offer any decent distance MAs, where have you other Canadians gone? U.S.? U.K.?

Last... if you could do any distance MA program, what would it be? Actually, if you could do any masters level program, what would it be?

Thanks for your time

Hi there. I'm a Canadian and my preferences have become: 1)flexibility of entry/timing 2) location/distance mode 3) cost/competitive and I think you'll find that Canada's distance learning programs with a few exceptions perhaps are not as flexible, user-friendly or as up to date as those of many other competitor distance education providers/nations. This would be my experience.

"Canada Losing Ground" http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2008/06/27/canada-report.html

A good source for current updates on Canadian distance learning options can be found at Canadian Virtual University http://www.cvu-uvc.ca/

Some complaints I have heard from different Canadian experts range from undervaluing or underperforming in international education programs, increasing budget cuts at departmental levels sometimes at annual rates of 10-15% without concurrent increases in student tuition or enrollments. Canada is also seeing a decline in attracting expatriate students and some blame its provincial educational standards with few national educational programs or initiatives for providing lack of clear branding and/or marketing to build reputation abroad.

The University of Calgary offers some education programs online.

Athabasca University is Canada's leader in distance education.

Thanks for the links! I'll be looking more into those, but there aren't a huge number of choices for masters in education.

Does anyone out there know if it is significantly more expensive for a Canadian to go to an American school. Aside from price, is there any other reason why a Canadian might not want to do a distance MA from an American school? How about the UK?

Thanks again to all who reply.

Be aware that if you are doing a distance education course from Canada while you are in Korea you will have to either claim residency of a province and therefore pay tax on your income in Korea, or you will have to pay the same price that foreigners pay to study in Canada.

I'm not sure which option would be the better deal, but it's somthing that canadians should know about.

I think different courses might have different rules about fees...sometimes you just have to be a citizen of Canada....not a resident....to pay the local fees. Just check it out beforehand.

Thanks again!

Has anyone done a Canadian distance MA from Korea?
Have any Canadians done American or British ones?

Hi,

The University of Calgary offers a Master of Education in TESOL via distance. However, it doesn't offer a distance Master of Arts degree. But The St.Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia offers a distance Master of Arts in Adult Education. The distance MA from Xavier is highly respected in Canada.
