Okay, I work for a hagwon. I know, that was my first mistake. So my boss handed me the new schedule for next semester. I have to teach 36 classes a week. Plus be here for two hours of prep. Classes are 40 min long, but it seems like a lot of work. I'm doing all this for the small sum of 2.2 million. That means that I make about $12 an hour (that's includes prep time rent). What do you think?

I work for a public elementary school and am required to be a seat warmer while not teaching between the hours of 9-5. I teach 22 classes each week with 14 of those classes being after school, which means I must develop the material and teach it on my own without a co-teacher. The classes span 1st-6th grade with some adult classes thrown in for good measure. I absolutely adore the kids and enjoy their bright, smiling faces. The school makes trouble for me about once per week...but I am learning to handle it now after 10 months. You asked about what others thought...I think if you are happy with your job, feel good about the effort you put forth and enjoy a nice quality of life then you should be satisfied. The fact that you posted the question makes me think you may have a bit of doubt in your mind. I wish you all the best, as they say. Smiles.

Hagwon contracts should stipulate what the 2.2 is for. 120 hours per month? 130?

calculate how many hours a month you'll be teaching. If it's over the total monthly hours laid out in the contract, then you're due some overtime pay.

If it's on or under, tough. That's what you signed to do.

To be honest, the max hours before over time is 130 hours a month. 36 hours for four weeks = 144 (40 min classes =1hr based on the contract). So I'm going to have to fight him for my damn over time every month. I already know this.

I teach 45 classes per week. That is 9 classes per day. 1 is 30 minutes long. The other 8 are 40 minutes each. Virtually all of my classes are the same. The prep work for a week takes me about an hour or two depending on the theme I select. Thursdays are speech writing day. Fridays are speech day.

Now, let me say that I work for what I consider to be a good hagwon in many respects. The owner is super nice. She bends over backwards to help. It doesn't change the fact that this is enough to really, really drain your energy. By Friday, I am pretty tired.

45 is too much even with a good boss. How do you have enough time to prepare for class? I try to come with lots of energy for each class, but around the 7 to 8 class, I just don't have enough juice.

I guess the main problem isn't working too many hours. I enjoy teaching, but having to deal with my boss. He tries to keep adding work outside of teaching (and paying). He lies to me and tries to cheat everyone. So working for him makes me even more tired then I really have to be. A good boss is hard to find in Korea. losing_touch, you're lucky to have a boss like that.

It also doesn't help that I work 8 more classes then the rest of the staff (eight people). Parents want a native speaker so he puts me in every class room. So if you hear that Native Teachers have it easy, then you can reference me.

Even people who don't have it quite as good as you are left out. I was working less than the lowest option during my brief time in a hagwon.

I'm currently doing 17 hours a week under contract and 6 more hours a week on overtime, (up to 50,000 an hour).

If you work more than 24 hours a week in anything other than your first year then you are a bloody fool.

If you work 36 hours for 2.2 million then you are an utter fool. You could be making more money flipping burgers in McDonalds for that money.

Of course, but McDonald's wouldn't be as rewarding.

I think 35 teaching hours a week is pretty standard for most big hagwons and for most people starting out.

Sure about that? Who told you that? Your boss??! Laughing

35 classroom hours per week is a brutal schedule. Only the worst hagwons would ask that of their teachers for the basic pay. I've actually never met anyone who worked more than 30 hours for basic pay.

Even in my first year crappy ECC job back in 2000 I only worked 28 classroom hours per week for basic pay. 35?? No way.

Ugh, no, actually I am not sure at all. I have lowered my certainty level to a mild 20% after reading your reply. Maybe I mean 26 teaching hours a week. I am trying to remember back to my days at an ECC hagwon too.
I also should have said that this number was the maximum. Usually, the actual number is much lower. The gap is for intensive periods when the kids should be enjoying their vacation.

In any event,
Ryan

OP, are you Korean? That makes it even more ridiculous if you are 'cause you could walk right out the door and get a better job tomorrow if you aren't restricted by an E2 visa.
