I found the Scared in Michigan thread interesting, as it seems like a lot of people (myself included) are from Michigan. Personally, I'm from northern lower Michigan (below the bridge, so I guess that makes me a troll  ). I've been in Korea since the '80s. I visit back to Michigan once a year, during the summer (I can't stand the heat/humidity of Korea in the summer, and I don't care much for Michigan winters). I love both places and consider them both home.
How about other Michiganders? What's your story? The poll is primarily to see how many are from Michigan, but you need at least two poll choices, so I added the other regions. |

Let's see, I grew up in South Eastern Michigan. Really close to Dundee (the place with the Cabellas). Ended up in Ann Arbor for the past few years. Spent several years in a dead-end job with U of M. Wife and I came to Korea.
If I didn't have family in Michigan, I don't think there would be any draw to return. |

Well I'm a proud Yooper and am from Marquette, right smack center of the U.P. Also a proud participant in the Trenary Outhouse Races, DA Yoopers fan club and volunteer for the UP 200! Am also an alumni of Northern Michigan University where the "N" stands for Nowledge (intentional) and a big Wildcats Fan.
I also endulge in Pasties with Salsa and Rudabegas. I love Trenary Toast and am a big fan of Blueberry Ale from the Vineyard in Marquette.
Sucks in winter though and boring as hell 365 days a year. Korea has a much better party scene.
Say ya to da UP eh? |

| I'm from Chicago but my grandparents live in Berrien County near St. Joseph, I go there at least 3-4 times a year. Beautiful country, SW Michigan is. |

I'm from the Grand Rapids area. Went to school in East Lansing (Michigan State!!) moved back to GR for a bit and met my husband. Moved in with him in Ann Arbor. Then we fled to Korea. Yes, he already posted in this thread.
Like I said in the other thread, as much as I like Michigan for the scenery and such...I will probably never move back there. Though I will be visiting there for the rest of my life since our families live there. |

Yeah, some say Michigander (sounds a little "goosey") and others say Michiganian. The former, however, is what I have most often heard.
I would add (to Nierlisse) that I taught industrial technology at LCC for three years back in the'80s, just before I returned to Korea. Also, my son was born in Sparrow Hospital. My wife enjoyed going to Okemos because of the Korean stores there (also in downtown E. Lansing). |

Your poll missed the Midwest.. people from Minnesota/Wisconsin should just choose Michigan? There's life on the other side of Lake Michigan, ya know 
I've been traveling around Korea and met lots of Michiganoids in Busan and Daegu. Why so many Wolverines? Not that there's anything wrong with that. |

Question about Michigan:
What makes that state so dangerous?
And I emphasise "state", because we normally hear about American cities that are dangerous/safe, and crime stats on individual cities abound.
I get the feeling from what I've read -- and even more so from conversations I've had with essentially everyone I've met from Michigan -- that it's not just Detroit, and you're not instantly safe & all is well when you move away from that city. No, you gotta go further than that. |

Actually, in northern lower Michigan, we generally feel anything south of M-55 is another state. It's still relatively safe in the northern part of the state. People still often leave their doors unlocked and keys in car ignitions without worry. |

| I agree, I live in East Lansing right now and the lower half of the state is very different from the northern, "Up North." I think most people grew up in the city and moved to the suburbs and they are just custom to locking their doors and taking caution. You have to be careful pretty much anywhere in the suburbs though�. my work is in Okemos (a very nice area outside of Lansing) and our cars get broken into on a monthly basis. An entire family, my family was friends with, was murdered in Livonia a few years back in a very nice area outside of Detroit (2 adults, 3 kids)� I guess you�re never really safe anywhere. |

from michigan, but not in korea.
i've lived in michigan all of my life and i've never heard the "michigan isn't safe" thing.
i've walked home at 2 and 3am and didn't fear for my life.
maybe some people just say stuff to "be safe", and then assume that their area is more dangerous than it really is?
anyways, i like the wolverine state, and i would go back.
maybe if people spent time trying to help bring new ideas and stuff in, instead of dissing the place, it would flourish more.
and GO BLUE!! |
