Despite recent events, there has always been some threat from the north of attacking the south again. Whether or not it is an invasion or utter destruction by projectile (conventional, chemical,biological), it is nothing new to hear such threats coming from the north.

That being said, over the short 4 years that I have been here, I have often thought to myself, that if the south were to be attacked, would I be allowed to stroll on over to the nearest Korean military base, and volunteer to help defend this country? Would i flee to the embassy or some US base and beg to be put on a flight home?

Disregarding all of the logistics of this thought (Korean army will not accept foreigner/ My US military service finished more than 10 years ago/ etc) I wonder how many of us would be willing to fight for the country that we currently call home?

Personally speaking, and I am sure that many will quite strongly disagree with me on this, I feel that if I am here at the time of conflict, I have somewhat of an obligation to assist if possible. A passing tourist is one thing, but those of us here for work/study and other more permanent reasons have a vested interest in seeing the country defended.

If push came to shove, how many of those here would fight to defend the land you work in, play in, pay taxes in? Am I alone in feeling that it would be my duty to help defend this country (or any country) that I spend my life in and enjoy the benefits of that country?

Everyday experiences with Korean people has hammered one thing home: I am NOT Korean. I am NOT a member of this society at all. Therefore, I feel no obligation to act as such.

Absolutely not. Under no circumstances would i ever believe that I should feel obligated to defending Korea. The only way I would fight would be for self protection. If that means I'd have defend myself against the NK's then so be it. You can call me a coward, but the only thing i would be fighting for is a way out of the country. If I have to help the south koreans in the process so be it, but it is by no means an act of patriotism.

As an anonymous poster on this board, I would fight to the death along side my Korean brothers.

As a real person in real life I would be pushing old ladies and kids out of the way as I ran to the first mode of transport out of this burg.

Wouldn't fighting to help the Korea's for most Engrish teacehers be more of a pain in the ass than a help for south korea?

I guess they might let you help in their home defence force or something like that if all hell broke loose and you were trapped like in the middle of Korea.

If a real war did break out, foreign English teachers living in Korea might not have much choice in the matter. After all, if you can't get on that boat out, you won't be able to drive up to Canada.

I've seen the movie TaeGukki. There were 2 brothers and the soldiers were yanking men off the street to go fight when the Korean war broke out. The older brother got on the train to try dragging his brother off the train but the soldiers sent both brothers to the front line even though only 1 brother was supposed to go. I don't know how much is fact or fiction in that movie, but a lot of rules tend to get swept aside when real wars break out.
