| I have two friends (a couple) that are both teachers in Canada and have their Bed's. Anyone know what they can expect for a salary? |

Korea's a joke when it comes to qualifications.
There are exceptional cases...but most likely they'd be making 50-100 more than the 22 year old with the degree in TV studies. Same goes for non-Koreans with Masters degrees....100/month more than someone with a B.A.
Now--if they really have their heart set on coming here to teach English then they should have documentation of their work at accredited schools ready.
A couple years of real school experience plus the Education degree should put them a couple notches higher (but not at the top) in the public school system (Gepik/Smoe/Epik) |

Why come to Korea with a B.Ed.?
With a B. Ed., you can go to a Hong Kong (N.E.T. public school) and earn a lot more money, and also the ME pays more for B.Ed's.
If I had a B. Ed., I'd be gone tomorrow.
Good luck. |

Regarding the questions of more money or not, Korea has a lot of funding allotted for English education, but also has a set amount they are willing to pay to foreign workers. Don't expect or feel entitled to higher pay than what the majority of people coming here are getting. If you have the best educational background and training it might only make a difference with regard to finding a better school with better working conditions, but don't be fooled for a second thinking that your credentials are going to yield you more money. I hate to burst the hypothetical balloon, but I have been here for 5 years now, and that is just the reality, unless you know someone who can get you in and convince someone that you can get more money. Cheers |

| That's exactly their debate, to Hong Kong or Korea. They're both from a small town in Canada and would rather go to city the size of Busan near the ocean etc. I was just curious if those jobs that offer up to 2.8 or 3.0 would apply to them since they have a few years teaching in Canada along with their degree. |

You need a Period after the B. and to capitalize the ED.
Otherwise, a bed's only good for sleeping on.

This information is totally accurate. I have a B.Ed. Major TESOL, with 11 years experience, and I was started at 2.2 a few years back in the public system. The scale is set and that is it. What you will get though is more respect for your opinions by admin and Korean teachers. |

| I thought the OP already had his own rotating barber pole and wondered if beds would increase his profit margin...it's not THAT kind of job discussion, man. |

The Hong KOng job is more money, I was heading there initially, but there is on big difference: The accomadation is not provided. And renting in Hong Kong is not cheap, to say the least, unless you like living in box patrolled by drunk Triads.
The HOng Kong job still sounds appealling to me, but I'd lose half my pay in rent and this is one of the first years (first year I was told) that the program is in effect so there will be all sorts of problems.
But, again, if not for the grace of Allah I'd be in Hong Kong right now probably complaining about old people shoving me on the subway |

| There is a HK housing allowance. Friend lived in a dive in Kowloon and hardly even needed to touch his base salary. |

The secondary school NET program started in '98 so it has been around for awhile...the primary one started a couple of years after that.
If you have two teachers on the NET program living together...then the world is your oyster. Even at the low end of the pay scale you could easily save a lot of money. The NET program offers a housing allowance..around 13K HK a month I think. A couple would only get one allowance but if you live and work in the New Territories...this is enough for a very nice apartment or you could get a serviced apartment.
I just checked and two teachers with one allowance at the low end of the payscale would get about $8500 Canadian a month...I would say that you could easy live on about 3500 a month...rent and everything...not the high life but still a nice live (in the new territories)...and save $5000 a month. Every year you are there, you get a raise. And there is a nice bonus at the end of every two years. And they fly you home at the end of every contract...it is a good job.
I used to be Scott in HK...and I always thought it was a great place to work...I did from 98-04....only came to Korea because the cost of schooling would have been far too much...and so we could be with my wife's family. |
