I remember reading a few years ago about a group of people in Busan (was it the Busan 5? Babopalooza?) who were detained/fined/deported for giving some sort of public performance.

People were discussing the major issue being their decision to charge money for the performance, after drawing attention to themselves by poking fun at some Korean oddities, etc.

My question is, how is it that so many bars feature weekly performances by foreigner bands without drawing any attention from immigration?

Korean law is full of loop-holes and pits, and is purposely vague. As long as you don't piss off the wrong people, you're fine. That's how ajeoshi justice works.

I realize this might naive, but could it be the difference of drawn attention. If you state "a public performance", it sounds like it was outside and done at some random location. If you state "foreign acts in a club or bar", it's in an enclosed enviroment and if one wants to partake, they can enter.

If you stage a performance ranking on Korean culture outside for anyone to see, it would make sense for it to potentially be shut down.

could also be that the foreigners themselves were the ones receiving the money, while at bars and nightclubs it's usually the owners/promoters that recieve actual ticket money... maybe a loophole there.
