As discussed briefly in this article, a laser being worked on in California may provide some interesting technological possibilities. Not much to debate here really, just may be of interest to some people here.
Here is the National Ignition Facility's web site for people interested. |

Ve hav invented the world's largest laser system!!!!!! Mwha ha ha!!
Scary stuff, but solving the "long-sought goal of 'energy gain'" sounds pretty useful! |

Maybe they can sell it to pay off some of their debt to society/civilization. |

An amazing breakthough. Seems like one of these "technological breakthrough" stories appear once a month. This is however an amazing achievement, I wonder if it is being hyped as much as it should be. Total energy gain from a clean source.
And just think if we able to put it on an spherical orbital platform! Dum dum dum dum da dum... dum da dum. |

It's really not being talked about as much as it should be, unfortunately. The reason is that most people don't care. I'm not really certain how much thought the average man puts into where his energy comes from or how those sources could be improved, but I suspect it isn't much. |

As far as I can see the DOE has only certified NIF and it won't be until 2010 before we'll know if it will work or not. |

I don't think that makes it less interesting or worthy of attention. There is immense potential here, quite exciting. |

If they have really taken a step closer to clean, safe fusion energy, it will definitely be something to keep an eye on, if not celebrate. This form of technology has other applications as well...it could be an effective - although extremely expensive - way of processing hazardous waste. |

It's interesting that the article talks about the military applications of the site, when all of the other ones I've read have focused exclusively on the potential for energy generation. I think that they expect to have a working power station by about 2050, comparable to the ITER project. |
