I'm currently traveling in South East Asia and preparing to apply for teaching jobs in Korea. I'm wondering if it is possible to obtain the work Visa w/o returning my country of orgin USA? Someone told me that I have to have the Visa paperwork processed in my country of orgin. Is this true? What ARE the steps to obtaining a work Visa as an English teacher in Korea?

Thanks,

Erik

OP have you ever worked in Korea before? If you have than you are in the clear to get a visa from another country. Another user on this board did it in Thailand, can't remember the username.

However if this is your first time coming over here than you have to return to your country of origin for a visa interview that can only be done in your homeland.

Hope that helps.

Thanks. I have not taught in Korea before and I had not planned to return to my country of orgin before getting the job. I just figured Everything could be taken care of here. Wow that really changes things for me. Do you happen to know if Taiwan has the same rule?

That would be me! I got my first E-2 visa issued in Bangkok. Despite what you might read, it can be done. It is listed on the immigration website. You need to find an employer who will go through the additional step of having your degree verified by the KCUE. Your future employer must handle this process. It isn't something you can do yourself. The process of having your degree verified takes a week or two. Hell, I think I was in Phuket when mine was being verified. Nonetheless, when it has been verified by them, embassies and consulates can access the information with their computer system. This provides the loophole you need to be exempt from the interview requirement.

Oh goodie. I knew there had to be a way. Is this much trouble for the employer?

Thanks for the reply.

No, it costs them a little bit of money. They simply need to call them and find out the details. They have to send them your diploma. That is about it. You might have to educate them about the process and get them to pick up the phone. It doesn't seem to be well known.
