For those of you who have or had to administer a speaking test, were you asked for those grades? Will they be factored into the students final grades? I have not been asked to submit mine to anyone. Should I just shred them and call it a year? I just want to know how insignificant my presence really is and this may be a good indicator!

Depends on the school. In the past my school has paid little if any attention to them other than submitting a report to the local Education Office, but these days they seem to be putting more stock in the results. My co-t just informed me that they want more qualitative comments on students this year as compared to other years in the past. I try to give the same attention as anything else I do in the classroom. It is one of the few scheduled activities which provide me with a major input.

I was required to give them a grade for the speaking test....but I could only give them an A, B, or C. My CT was very honest about it, too. They had not yet decided how many points each grade was worth, but in the end, I had very little input. An A was to be worth 10 points, a B either 8 or 9, and a C either 6 or 8. This was out of 100 points for the total grade.

I am the only one marking the english speakign test at my school, so my marks are the only reference possible. Now I know that they will bell curve (read: inflate) the marks and that is acceptable by me. Also the speaking test was worth 10% of their final grade as well.

My speaking test is worth 10% of their final grade, and out of 10 points, the lowest they can receive is 5 points. I finally convinced my co teacher that we should assign homework this year, which we've been doing. I just did the speaking tests the other day and was told that they are only worth 8% of their final grade because the homework is worth the other 2%. So I have a say, yet it's a constant 10%, ignoring how much work is actually done. Frustrating.

Last semester, the only grades I gave were the speaking test. All other assignments were worth a certain number of "points" (1, 2, or 3, etc) and the system was completely phoney. I mean it really had no significance, and I just shreded everything. I wasn't upset, though. The trick is to make the students think everything counts (which they did)! This semester, mine gave me power over the "speaking part" of their overall English grade, whatever that means.

Do what I'm going to do- print up a nice set of class grades for each class, A, B, C, or numbers, or whatever they ask for. Hand them in, and forget about it. If they use them, they use them. If they don't, who cares? Unless you plan on staying at your school for like 4 years and really want to make your class count for something on their permenant grade sheet, it's not worth the trouble.

At my university, approximately 20 to 35 percent of their grade is based on speaking tests. It depends on the class. These are 1st-year students.
