Another post about runners got me thinking, has anyone ever put in notice, quit a hagwon job, and moved on to another job in Korea while staying on reasonable terms with the hagwon? Does anyone even know of anyone who's done this? I can't recall ever meeting a single person who has. Everyone I've met who's quit, even if they tried to be respectable about it and give notice and fulfill their obligations, has left on terrible terms. This would include me. Ever heard of any exceptions?

I left at the beginning of my contract...1st semester. I didn't feel like the school was a good fit for me. I put in a 45 day notice and left at the end of the semester. I left on good terms.

This was a hagwon? They don't normally run on a semester basis.

I left after a 6 month stint. I didn't give a 2 month notice but I did lose some pay for being allowed to "move on". The hagwon didn't get me an apartment when I came and didn't want to get one after living arrangements changed. At first the owner told me I had to find a replacement, but after the guy never showed up for an interview he just let me go.

If you leave after the 9 month mark, make sure you get a letter of release.

I did it. Sort of.

After I'd been with my hagwon for 18 months they decided they no longer needed a foreign teacher. The owner/director had decided to go back to school and get her doctorate so they were really cutting back on the amount of classes. They helped me me find my new job and I STILL live in the hagwon's apartment.

Of course I also got pregnant and had a baby while I worked with them so they're very close to my husband and I. They're my sons godparents. We're getting ready to move again and they're super sad we're leaving.

I go to my old boss for everything. If I need help with anything in Korea I call her, not anyone I currently work with.

I've done it twice. Gave notice, got LORs, moved on to better jobs.

I'm hoping to do it. Any advice?

With an LOR, and supposedly only after the 9 month mark, you can simply transfer your visa, without having to resubmit all the documents.

The thing is, you get a lot of conflicting info here. I actually transferred after the 4th month, but admit that it may have been just an extremely lucky day.

I did, and I've posted about it before. was a great gig; we sat down together and I practically wrote my own contract; they sent me to Jpn and maybe 2 months later I was offered a ps spot, they gave me an LOR and I transferred my visa; I wound up doing some part time work for them over the years. I was never asked to repay my flight or anything.

they've since moved and gone on to a different business altogether but we stayed in contact for quite a while.

probably the exception not the rule but don't think it's really all that unusual.

PM sent. Basically I think it helps to be nice and cooperative about it. Even if you have to pay a penalty, it's worth it if you're moving on to something better.
