Eh, it's a bar. If you want to be coddled, go to one of the hotel bar-wanna-bes and get ready to big up on the tab.

3 Alley? Been there a couple of times. Food is good, prices are reasonable, the place has an edge, you can chuck darts, shoot pool, stand, sit...what do you want?

So, yes, the could clean the air conditioning once in while. Fine. Give it a rest already.

And about the service (as long as I'm on the thread)....

This is not Europe or N. America. Most of the waiters and waitresses are transient or part time Korean workers. They whole table service thing is a new and not part of the Korean culture. So they miss or mess up some of the finer points of non-intrusive service. Again, get over it.

At some pubs you get the opposite - you have to march up to the bar to get someone's attention long enough to order, or the staff walks around in a customer ignoring, seemingly barbituite induced haze. I'd rather have a waitress asking me if I'm ready for another pint than be chasing one down when I am ready.

Just let the waiter/waitress know that you'll give them a shout when you're ready. That should do it. They're not looking to piss anyone off on purpose, they're just providing a type of service that is alien to them.

End defensive rant.

Nonsense-they are told to get people to drink quicker or vacate eg filling up people's beers from their own pitcher which is sheer pushiness.

So just don't be such a pushover. It's your beer, like you said. Just say, "Don't touch my beer!" They'll get it.

Or has anyone here complaining actually had a conversation with the owners about this instead of just complaining to other customers?

Or keep it simple...just drink faster! Laughing

ah, no. I won't get over it. Bad service is bad service. I don't have to put up with it. 3 Alleys isn't all that. There are better pubs around these days and I decided to go to those when in Itaewon.

Strange how pushy waitressing and rude bartenders seems to be a tradition at 3 Alleys now. Gunther started it, then it was kept on by the new owner......wow, it's like the Fawlty Towers of Itaewon.

Wolfhound has better booze, better food, and a much better atmosphere.

Question

I thought table service was more common in Korean bars/restaurants than in western ones.

And you don't have to worry about breathing bad air at the Wolfhound!

Yeah, I went to both bars (3 Alley and Wolfhound) this Saturday and the service at the Wolfhound is better (the food too) but it is easier to strike up a conversation with someone at the bar at 3 Alley.
At the Wolfhound, it's usually a bunch of younger teachers hanging out with their little 'clique'. At 3 Alley, it's a bunch of older guys hanging out solo.

Yeah, I have to say the place isn't the friendliest. The new upstairs sports bar seems unfinished and the TV reception wasn't great.

The rude service might be attributable to the owner, who seems to have a real chip on his shoulder.

That's the NZ guy Bernie... The other owner Albert (who owns Sam Ryan's upstairs) has always been a great guy when I've been there...

I was talking about Al; he is hot and cold all the time, mostly cold.

never had a problem with 3 Alley's service. Never once been told to hurry up and order another drink. They do hover the tables but that's hella better than having to scream "yeogigo" and being completely ignored.
But I can't say I've seen their Air Cons. I'll take a look next time I'm there.

I go there all the time and there really nice to me and the mrs. I tend to nurse my beers and the staff doesnt bother me at all. al and bernie are great people

biggest problem i've seen recently is the turnover in waitstaff. always have to teach the new ones that they have nuts and what i drink.

al brought back stephanie to help run the new place upstairs which will help that place out. its not going to be 3 alley part deaux, different menu different vibe (no wall in the mens room Crying or Very sad ) etc

Ya, but how awesome is it to piss in a trough again? Made my night when I was there on Friday, LOL...

As for 3 Alley service, never had a problem... Group of friends and I go there for trivia on Thursdays... When we want more beer, and we usually do, it's there in a minute or two....
By comparison, I've been to the Wolfhound on similarly busy nights and waitied 10+ minutes for a pitcher...
(Just my 100 wons' worth...)

I've had a few problems at 3 Alley. I didn't appreciate being yelled at loudly when I was served flat beer nor did my friend appreciate the cockroach that was served with her salad. Or the time when a Korean family was yelled at and shown up in a pack bar or....I'll stop here but I do have more stories.

Yea. I don't go there anymore.

Will somebody tell Bernie or Al to use a bit of the money they're making and do something about the air conditioners?

If you feel so strongly about it, why don't you do it yourself.
