i'm not judging whether you should run or not -- friends of mine ran and i fully supported them on it.

but please try to pay your bills before you leave! it may mean 'trusting' the admin to pay them (which they may or may not do), but please don't make it harder for the rest of us to get things like credit cards, skylife, mobiles, etc.

that is all. (run like the wind!)

Foreigners who run and don't pay their bills are lowlife scum. This country doesn't owe you guys any favors. I just hope this kind of attitude is only for the exceptional cases.

Other thins runners shouldn't do.

1) Borrow money from a bunch of people knowing damn well your leaving in a week.

2) After someone is nice to you, don't turn around and screw them.

I'd like to add a bit "HERE HERE!" to that.

Good points from all. But sadly, the people who would actually heed this advice probably would not be the type to do these kinds of things in the first place.

When bosses still own them money it's kind of hard to justify to oneself paying the bills on a place in the bosses' names.

Some teachers who do not run are guilty of these things as well. Please pay back your friends and coworkers, pay your bills and return the things you borrowed ... Your friends, coworkers and the utility companies didn't cheat you, so why screw them?

No matter what others have done to you, you should try to do the right thing and maintain your own reputation for being honest.

"You're" and "boss's."

Run, Terry, run. Wherever the world may find you. Run, Terry, run.

Perhaps the runner wouldn't've left the bills unpaid if he'd gotten paid in the first place! Kind of hard to pay up when broke. And maybe if the boss had been paying the employee, the employee wouldn't've run.

I appreciate that, but there is always the future. During one of my stints in Japan, I realized I hadn't paid a bill after I'd departed. I had to wait a couple of months before I could pay it back in full, but I did.

They just kind of take it out of your check anyway. If you're running, you have to time it perfectly if you want to get out without paying.

You're making an assumption that all people who run do so because they are not being paid. There are plenty who do runners for spurious reasons. If they leave just because they decide they don't really like teaching and then don't pay their bills that's pretty shitty behavior.

I'm making no assumptions at all. I merely pointed out the simple fact that for those who have been financially shafted by their employer, it may be difficult to pay money they don't have. Did you not see the first word in my post?

one obvious simple solution to the 'runner' problem: security deposits. why is this such a bewildering concept in this country?

Here's another obvious solution: employers should be required to have enough money in a trust account to pay employees' salaries.

Want another one? Okay, here you go: let the visa holder own the visa. That way, the employee can switch jobs to an honest employer without all the crud Korea requires of E-2 visa holders.

Yet another one? The Korean government could actually start caring about the terrible image scummy hagweon bosses give the country and enforce the laws relating to treatment of employees.
