hi everyone!
okie dokie here is the deal... i applied to epik kinda late and josh kim said he just got my documents right? and he said my top 3 choices were already full and if i would be okay going to ulsan in august. i said OF COURSE! (as long as i can leave california and have a job for a year or two...) im very very happy with it! right? okay so then he says woo hoo yay (along those lines) and that he'll put me up for placement in ulsan then.
long intro. im sorry. but anyway my question is: does anyone not get a placement or job after theyve already sent in all their documents and stuff?? im kinda worried about that and dont want to tell too many people what's up until i know for sure that im going. and man that would suck because... that apostille was expensive... sending it there globally was expensive... okay well thanks ahead of time! |

I'm kind of in the same situation. I've had to switch my choice from Busan to Incheon and finally to Ulsan to hopefully get a placement. Since there are 70 spots for August, I'm hoping I will get a place in Ulsan, but won't know for a few weeks apparently. I guess it's just the waiting game now. |

I'm with you.
I have been trying to make plans for August without anyone noticing what's up. I sold a bunch of big ticket items (almost new TV and computer) and recently had my car detailed so it is ready to sell.
My understanding is the process works like this:
1. Interview with EPIK.
2. You pass interview.
3. You send EPIK your documents.
4. They send you a contract.
5. You arrange for Visa and interview with embassy.
6. You get Visa
7. You go to Korea
I think most of us are stuck at step 4.
When we get the contract that doesn't mean we're safe! My EPIK recruiter told me about 5% of applicants get bounced at the Visa/embassy stage.
So I say its not final until you have a Visa in your hand. |

EPIK received my docs on May 12th. I got word from Rowan this past friday that he was going to send out my contract later today. So a little over three weeks for me to hear from him.

Did he say why? With an EPIK contract you don't even need to do an embassy interview, so what's the issue? |

MissLady717, Just curious, what were your top 3 choices?
My recruiter had told me that we would be ok for securing a position in a metro location other than Busan if our docs were in by last week, but I'm having second thoughts that that was accurate. |

I misread the email. It said 5% of applicants are rejected after sending the documents in - usually due to poor transcripts or letter of recommendation.
However, they do state that an interview is required with the Korean Consulate prior to getting the Visa. Not sure if this actually happens or not. |

Hmm...I've been telling people that I'm going to Korea in August...hopefully I'm not giving myself "bad karma"...although I do usually add that it's still pending on my visa documents being okay. Although I don't see why I should have a problem with that.
Granted, I'm fresh out of college and currently unemployed, so there isn't really any downside for me to be telling people that I'm going (i.e. no potential backlash from a current employer). |

I sent my documents in the first weekend of May and still haven't heard anything. My friend who sent her documents at the same time as me already has her contract. Hmm. |

i chose busan, incheon, and daegu? the week before i sent my documents they told me busan was already filled. so i called josh and he changed my 3 choices around and added in something that started with a "g"? but then he gave me a call the day he got my docs and said that if i really wanted a metropolitan city he was going to set me up in ulsan so... i was pretty happy with that. haha.
well i am glad i am not the only one stressing over this! i was just worried that maybe the schools wont like my transcripts cuz i mean... theyre not PERFECT. i have a few Cs (and i wont lie... a D on there as well) and was worried they would think i was a thug gangster yo yo yo wussup mah ____ cuz my picture is a little bit... yeah. the guy wouldnt retake it and i was in a rush to send it in... so my cheeks are really red... and im muggin at the camera pretty hard... hahaha.
anyway i wish us all goodluck! well all meet at orientation hopefully! |

Ulsan sucks. That's why so many people are needed.
The pollution is very real also. You will get sick because the paint from ship painting(24/7 construction) is in the air along with chemicals from the large industrial plants. The POE can be real A-holes too you will be worked like a dog without renewal in some cases(???) even if you were outstanding in every other EPIK placement you may have ever had.. there are less stressful places than that placement.
Busan is the place everybody wants because the POE is way better which is the reason they fill so quickly(better accommodation, full baths, ovens even, more agreeable POE). The best placements always require fewer Epikers.
The foreigners and NETs that work in Ulsan are the real saving graces; they're helpful and non-snobby with none of the "pretend I don't see you" BS common amongst foreigners in other parts of Korea. |

If you want a particular placement apply directly months in advance either physically in person if in country or mail your resume to the POE yourself.
Recruiters and the interviewing staff at the Korean "wait" until they have enough applicants before they send applications(you miss on your preferred choice of placements having to settle on less popular destinations). |
