| A student visa is not a visa of convenience. |

I love how Koreans expect to have 'rights' wherever they go yet don't feel the need to give foreigners any rights in their own country.
'How could they do this to me and my baby?' |

This woman had no intention of being a proper student.
She was looking for any way to stay so that her impending birth could be an "anchor baby".
I completely agree with not granting her a visa!
This birthing tour crap needs the smack down! |

I understand what you're saying, but for all we know she advocates equal rights for foreign workers in Korea- the ones denying us things like bank cards and access to booking clubs are quite possibly different people. |

Maybe you didn't read all of the article.
"A law change in 2006 means children born in New Zealand will not obtain citizenship unless at least one of the parents is a New Zealand citizen."
She was willing to pay for the maternity care of her child that would not be granted citizenship. What's the problem? |

| Funny. Could go either way as a passport baby but still if she had the sejongs and kicked her out. I`m surprised. Usually capitalism trumps social welfare system. |

| Seems a bit strange since the kid would have no claim to citizenship and they were prepared to pay. Can't be a big shortage of doctors. Facilities maybe... |

Well, a woman who is pregnant and all of a sudden wants a student visa doesn't really look good on paper. You don't usually have pregnant women all of a sudden applying to go to school. However, since her child can't get citizenship it doesn't make sense to give birth in New Zealand.
Why not do it in South Korea? Perhaps, the woman didn't know that you can't get citizenship in New Zealand if none of your parents are from the country.
Do you think the US should copy New Zealand? Why or why not?
That sounds like an essay question. |

It reads like she got pregnant in Korea with her Kiwi boyfriend, and doesn't want to go home-- not for the citizenship, but because she can't face her family maybe.
She'll just have to go home, marry him and come back on the spousal. You can't overstay your tourist visa. "How can they do this to me and my baby" doesn't hold up. Unless she's at the very end of pregnancy or has complications preventing travel, it's not a death sentence, just a visa refusal. Happens all the time. |

another one - not just students......
Shortage of facilities is said to be the reasoning behind the rulings. |
Now this story is much more interesting since doctors had said this woman was high-risk for premature labor and had placed her on bed rest. |

| Immigration NZ could simply use better judgment and allow both ladies to stay. It's really hard to believe the entire country lacks medical facilities for two cases. |
