What do you make of this stuff? Nas, Mobb Deep, Wu-Tang, Dre, you get the idea. I've always been into it, the jazzy, grimey, or poetic stuff. Some of these guys had talent. Somehow I don't like much of the earlier stuff, I guess maybe the production was still too influenced by disco. A little sampling, you might notice a theme or two:

Nas - NY State of Mind http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKjj4hk0pV4&feature=related

Mobb Deep - Drink Away the Pain http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_PANWkHTT8

Common Sense - I Used to Love H.E.R. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C99iG4HoO1c

Pete Rock - They Reminisce Over You http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiOcVWQY2bc

Yes, those are the days when hip hop was really at its creative prime (in my not so humble opinion). Some of those artists made some really good stuff for awhile. Then there was some more intelligent sounding stuff in the late 90s on the independent labels. Now it's a bunch of crrrrrrrrrrrap.

90s was great although have to say it isn't as bad now as it made out to be.

Scarface in his prime was great.
ghostface although his prime is more late 90s/early noughties.

Totally on board with this.

36 Chambers (Wu-tang) and Infamous (Mobb Deep) are still two of my all-time favs.

And a few years later when Wu, Biggie, and 2Pac all dropped double CDs (arguably all of their best works, too) was a fantastic year for hip-hop. My love of rap has kind of gone downhill since that golden year.

It's so bad now it tarnishes my impression of the older stuff and when I put it all into perspective it just seems like a bunch of posturing garbage that celebrates the worst aspects of society. Still think breakdancing is kind of cool, though...

Just the other day, I was listening to '19 Naughty III' by Naughty By Nature. Even though a lot of the tracks have dated a bit, Treach still stands out as one of the best MCs I've ever heard.
Also, 93 'til Infinity is still incredible after 16 years. Anyone remember Lords of The Underground?
