it doesn't matter if your music is not from iTunes, none of mine is.
Anyway besides an ipod touch, lots of people here recommend the cowon d2. |

I have an iRiver Lplayer which is nice little player.
I would check something like CNET, Amazon for reviews and of course Google for MP3 review sites. It took me months to figure out what I wanted and at the price I wanted to pay. There are too many cool ones out there. I already want to throw mine away and get a new one.
Have fun looking. |

Seconded. I actually didn't like it at first.... but the newer firmware updates have really made it the player it was supposed to be. Awesome. Dragging and dropping audio and video without conversion is so convenient. The screen is amazing and incredibly scratch resistant. It's called Gorilla Glass. Watch the guy on youtube try to scratch his S9 with the point of a kitchen knife. He can't make the slightest scratch!!
The Kor-Eng-Kor dictionary is quite good.
Games are being written for it now.
Cool FM radio.
Excellent photo viewer.
Lots of little PDA features.
The menu system on Cowon players can be pretty confusing though. I still don't like it. I prefer the Windows-style menu system.
The only big thing missing from the S9 is internet access, which is okay by me because I hate trying to use internet on small, phone-sized screens anyway. Not a satisfying user experience.
The D2 is a good cheaper option. It will probably be discontinued this year so you might, just might, get a bargain. Although Korean retailers tend to not mark down older stuff much.
The Samsung P3 could also be worth a look. |

I'm looking also and the S9 is the best player I've seen around.
My only question for eamo and zappa...does Cowon use a program like iTunes or IRiver or is the player drag-and-drop? |

Drag and drop.
S9 natively plays all commonly used audio and video formats. No software needed!!
In saying that, some video files of a bigger resolution won't play on the S9. The officially supported resolution is only something like 480x272......but I've found it will play files up to around 580x472, which is fantastic considering it's just a 3.3'' screen.
Any videos over 580x472 can be converted down for the S9 with the very easy to use software. Jetaudio. |

I agree, the P3 was my second choice. Better GUI. But the screen, battery life, and sound quality made me go with the S9. |

Thanks for clarifying that eamo. I quickly posted my question before fully reading your post. You said that it WAS drag-and-drop very early in your post.
I guess that removes one of the two last hurdles to purchase...the other being my wife! |

thanks for the replies. I'm mainly interested in an audio player, though having video function would be a plus.
I'd be looking 10gigs --> 40gigs. price range: $100-->250 |

| So how much are you looking to pay for a Cowon S9 or D2 in Korea? How good's battery-life? |

A few months ago I picked up a 4gig D2 with no DMB for 125kwon. Battery life destroys every other player on the market that I know of*. I have no idea how many hours I get, but at most I charge it once a week and that's a week I used it heavily.
*I lied. I remember looking for one that ran off an AA battery a few years back that was supposed to last something like 125 hours on one battery, I could only find it in one gig and didn't buy. |

I have both the iPod touch 2nd gen & the Cowon. Both are pretty good, but I use the Cowon more because not as proprietary (i.e. drag and drop), and has FM tuner (also picks up digital TV). Also has SD slot. I use the touch at home since it has Wi-Fi and can listen to stateside radio w/ Iheartradio -like a mini computer.
The iPod probably does much more than than I am aware of since I just bought it because of the hype. |
