Basically it's saying that the iPhone isn't in Korea because the telcoms here are still in the 1990s regarding mobile internet.
Korea is supposed to be the Hub of Sparkling Innovation, yet when they do protectionist crap (allowing Samsung and LG to create inferior iPhone fakes before they allow the real iPhone) they reek of a third world backwater.
The guy in the story said that basically the iPhone isn't that special because the specifications aren't special.
Wow. What a moron. He doesn't (and neither does corporate Korea apparently) get the idea of synergy. It isn't the basic specs that make the iPhone great. It's the way those specs come together.
Korea is often obsessed with ranking things and quantifying things. What they aren't good at are those things that can't be quantified.. such as user experience and ease of use and style. They (Corporate Korea) only see "Well, the LG phone has 342 different possible combinations of ring-tones, so it must be better than Samsung, who only has 341 combinations."
Blah. The iPhone simply makes Korean technology look like an a counterfeit louis vuitton. |

The iPhone clearly is better than any other phone around, BUT it doesn't have DMB TV. That's a great plus for any phone. I know I would love it if I could watch live TV on the subway back home. I think that's why it wont sell really well here when it eventually gets released.
I would definitely get one anyway. |

Its not the hardware sellers that don't want the iPhone. Its the software. iPhone comes to Korea, say goodbye to Melon, June, Nate, and all the other portals that make billions of Won a year.
Look at TWorld, for SK Telecom. Appstore would destroy that entire website. There goes a CRAPLOAD of revenue lost by SK Telecom because people would no longer be buying games, apps, etc... from that website.
A lot of Apps that make the iPhone great are broken in Korea anyways. Like, the App that tells you of the best restaurants close to your location.
The iPhone would be great in Korea, but there are a ton of other alternatives. Haptic 2, Omnia, and LG's Xenon are pretty neat devices.
Right now, the Palm Pre does something that the iPhone doesn't. That is multitasking. It lets you have multiple applications running. No more signing out of IM chat clients just to check your text messeges. |

The iPhone is inferior specs-wise, but the reason it has the edge is due to its base of developers and the App Store. Samsung and LG can't compete with the number of apps the iPhone has available. |

Personally i'm glad the iphone isn't here and hope it never comes. This way I don't have to see all the trendy "individualists" wandering around playing with their annoying yuppie toy.
Hell let's kick apple out like they did wal-mart (another beautiful day in Korea) and make a big bonfire for the ipods too.
In conclusion: Apple sux |

I kind of like how Korea is quite protective of it's industries. If only cough... cough... Canada would do the same, maybe some Canadian companies can flourish and become worldwide corporations. |

Or Canada's economy can go the way of Korea's (slowly down the tubes due to the increasing loss of competitive advantage.)
Canada is number 10 on the world economic competitiveness rankings:
http://www.weforum.org/en/initiatives/gcp/Global%20Competitiveness%20Report/index.htm
Higher than Korea. Canada's trade liberalization is actually helping the country. While Korea's anti-liberalization is harming it, despite the Park Chun-hee industrialization movement of the 1970s.
Korea's "worldwide corporations" are mostly empty shells. If Korea were forced to compete on equal trade footing, they'd quickly be dwarfed. The amount of subsidy that goes into companies like Hyundai and Samsung is very disturbing. Canada far exceeds Korea in standard of living.. that should be the real indicator.. how well the average person lives.
Canada should NEVER become more like Korea (at least in economics!) |

Built-in wibro, pico projectors, live streaming t.v., touch-screens, SD slots...yeah, Korean cell phone technology is WAY behind the U.S., where most people don't even know how to send text messages. |

"trendy" huh? Ok. Just like the original Apple (why would an individual ever need a personal computer?)
Annoying "yuppie toy?" ok. Whatever. What's wrong with being a "yuppie?"
I suppose you're all about granola and optional showers. Go hug a tree you communist.
Let's kick Samsung out of Korea too while we're at it. Sounds to me like you are one of those anti-corporate wanks that logs onto Dave's with your HP laptop while watching Office episodes stolen from bit torrent.
Stop being a hypocrite. The fact you're on a computer makes your arguments a little stupid. |

Live streaming TV? BFD. Who watches network TV in the US? When there is live streaming HBO, then maybe I'll care. Who needs WiBro? Who wants to pay for internet by the kilobyte? That's so 1998. With the iPhone, I can actually log onto the web and watch any damned thing I want. Like I really want to watch some sappy KBS drama on the subway, when I could watch a HiDef movie instead or watching streaming whatever from wherever.
If the iphone is so "inferior" then why has Korea conspired for so long to keep it out? Let the marketplace decide. If Korean "smart-phones" are so damned smart, then what are they worried about?
The App Store. Seamless internet that doesn't require a stupid, ultra-expensive "portal." Seamless integration with your computer and on and on.. |

And you sir sound like one of those people that eat endangered species for breakfast and watch homeless orphans fight each other to the death for laughs. Go hug a statue of Adam Smith and Ayn Rand beating up union workers with diamond police batons.
I'm not at all serious, just joining the ad hominem attack party. |

I don't have to hug a statue of Smith and Rand beating up union workers.. I can just go watch a beef or FTA protest instead. (of course, I'm rooting for the police in that case.) |
