I guess most people sitting here reading daves during school time have a Korean laptop or pc with a Korean language version of XP. Until now the only real option was to install an English version of XP. However after a bit of snooping around the internet I found a pretty good solution. Apologies if this has been posted before.

The solution needs a modicum of PC ability, but really it's extremely simple.

First you must Start menu > Run > Regedit

Next navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Nls\Language

While in that directory you must edit the values of Default andInstallLanguage

Change both of them to just one of these numbers: 0409 = "en-us;English (United States)" or 0809 = "en-gb;English (United Kingdom)" The default for Korean is 0412.

Download SP3 in English from http://www.Microsoft.Com/downloads/details.Aspx?FamilyId=5B33B5A8-5E76-401F-BE08

Restart your pc, install the update, restart the pc once more and voila your Korean language version of XP is now in English. Some Korean still remains via file names and applications, but everything to do with XP is now in English.

One tip, if your Korean version is already SP3 you must uninstall it. Check which version you have by entering winver in run.

Here is the link to the article.

Wow!

Hot tip. Have you tried it out? It could be a mean prank that kills your computer. My personal laptop is running K XP, so this could be very good. Plus school PCs, of course.

It definitely works, here are some screen shots. Notice some of the file names are still in hangul but everything else is now English. I'm using the Zune theme which is why it looks a little different.

To uninstall SP3 just go into 'Add or remove programs' on the control panal, make sure show updates is ticked and just uninstall SP3.

I did it, but it doesn't really change much to English. Pretty much everything is still in Korean. It's kinda weird though....for example in the Control Panel, half of the items are in English while the other half are still Korean.

Anyways, no big deal. I was bored yesterday afternoon so it gave me something to do. Smile

I'm unsure why, it worked pretty much 100% for me. Maybe you need to change the settings in 'Regional and language settings' in the control panel. The MS updates that are coming through are still in Korean, but I don't want to install them in case it resets everything :p

In fact looking at my control panel now I have several parts still in Korean. My guess is these are third party applications that are in Korean and thus not a part of Windows. That would happen especially if you're using a laptop because manufacturers like to ship their own oem versions of XP with different or added software(bloatware).

Yea, same as me. For day to day use Korean OS is fine. But I've been putting off upgrading to a wireless router as I knew it would be a pain to set up. Should be all go now.

Cheers.

Rolling Eyes

Not everyone has the keys, especially if they are using a work computer. This way you can just uninstall SP3 and put it back in Korean when you leave.

I'm another one who thinks it's just easier and better to install an English OS. Legal or cracked.
