i've heard that public jobs are harder to get in cities. Is this true? my recruiter tells me that i have no shot in big cities like Seoul unless im okay with private schools. I've been told that you need masters degree or a teaching degree to be competitive for big cities a 4 yr Bachelors isnt good enough. |

there's an element of truth in this, but only an element.
first of all, when you're talking big cities, you're really talking about Seoul and perhaps Busan. Incheon is certainly a big city but I don't think it's especially hard to get a PS job there.
SMOE does seem to have a slightly higher entrance standard, but even then, it's nothing that a pair of breasts, blonde hair and blue eyes can't easily overcome.
Generally speaking, yes, it's easier to get a hagwon gig because there are more of them and there is demand year round which isn't the case with the public school system.
the teacher's degree/master's is BS. I would be surprised if even 33% of the FT's in SMOE fulfilled that requirement. |

Make sure that you are going with more than one recruiter. Don't put your faith in one headhunter to locate you the position that you want.
There are pros and cons to the academies and the public school system. It really depends on what you are looking to achieve. If you are looking for the stability of a paycheck public schools and large academies are your safe bet. You can get screwed over in other ways from both the public schools and the academies. One of the downsides with SMOE is that you never know where they are going to place you. If you already have housing, they will try to place you near your apartment. So in that respect, you never know who you will be working with, and what your colleagues and principals will be like.
When are you looking to come to Korea? |

asap but realistically late july. my recruiter is from http://www.iloveesl.com/.
I've talked to him and seen some paperwork trying to get me into EPIK. He seems legit but you never know. Right now all ive done is submit a resume, photo and application. I still have to pick up my CBC and transcripts next week. |

From what I know, most public school openings are around the 3rd or 4th week of August. (I may be wrong, but that is when their summer vacation ends) So, unless you are replacing someone who left early, I don't know if you will get placed in July.
Some people suggest that you open up a different email account, and send out emails to different recruiters, and post your resume online. (Take your phone number off the resume) You will get a barrage of emails. Respond to them listing your demands. Don't settle for anything you don't feel comfortable with. There are tons of good places to work.
I am guessing you are from Ontario (based on a comment you made on another thread) if that is the case, you will need to go to the Korean embassy in Toronto. There is one supreme wench that works there. I have been in SO MANY arguements with her. It is not the girl who takes the paper work from you, it is another older hag that seems to have it out for foreign teachers. |
