Quote:
A 72-year-old great-grandmother in Texas has threatened to sue police after an officer "tased" her with an electronic stun gun.

Kathryn Winkfein was pulled over for speeding while doing her weekly shopping in Austin, Texas.

The officer shocked her with the taser gun after she resisted arrest and became argumentative.

CCTV footage showed her screaming with pain on the ground but police say that she was not seriously injured.

Mrs Winkfein was stopped by a police officer for speeding in her white pick-up truck.

Grainy police video footage shows the officer shove her and point the taser gun at her as she refuses to go quietly.

She dares the officer to shoot her, he opens fire.

As Mrs Winkfein writhes on the ground, the officer threatens to shoot again.

I was always under the impression that tasers were designed to be used as an instrument of non-lethal self-defense. It seems to me however that most police officers tend to use them as a means to gain compliance.

I can't believe that any police department actually has it on the books that officers are allowed to administer electrical shock to an individual just to get them to follow orders in a non lifethreatening situation. Clear cut case if you ask me. Give the old lady a million dollars.

Not exactly the incident show in the video but how many times do we have to see this scenario?

Cop: "Put your hands on your head sir/madam"
Individual: "What am I being arrested for officer?"
Cop: "Put your hand on your head!"
Individual: "Why?, I haven't done anything."
Cop: "Put your hands on your head."
Individual: "Can you just expl........." ZZZZAAAAAAAAPPPP.

That is the policy in many places. See this for an extreme example.

When an officer of the law asks you to do something that he is entitled to ask, it would be in your best interest to comply then. Complain later in a court of law if you feel you were treated injustly. That is how things are handled. If you resist arrest or otherwise disobey the officer's instructions, then you should be prepared to accept certain consequences.

And on a related topic it's pretty dumb to dare a police officer to shoot you with a taser.

Threatening to shoot again though was a bit over the top.

Just because you're old, does not mean you don't have to follow the law.

She seemed to be playing on her age.

What means should the police be allowed to use to force an individual to follow orders in a non life-threatening situation?

Tazers just seem to be a way of shooting people without the hassle of all the paperwork over the corpse. If she was stopping the policeman from doing his duty, he should have just arrested her.

He tried, she fought against him and wouldn't let him grab her arm. So he's in a situation he doesn't want to be in where he has to wrestle and possibly hurt a grandma. Kinda like in English class when you have had enough of little Kim jr. and you want to send him to the corner or out of class and he fights you tooth and nail.

Whatever happened to pepper spray though? They don't use that stuff anymore?

Yeah, I know. But I'm just wondering why it doesn't seem to be in use anymore. Were their similar problems? A little mace in the face would of worked nicely here.

What a sad state the world has come to!
