Hello all,
I was in the Marines a few yeas back then went to college, now Im on my way to S. Korea to work teaching English. I will be in Kunsan city not too far from the air base there.
I have been looking into the area and like what I see, hope that I feel the same when I arrive. The main reason Im posting on here is I thought it would be a good idea to get to know a few people from the area so that I can learn about the town first hand.
I should be in country July 1st but havent got my plane ticket yet so it could change a few days in either direction. The name of the school is KnC English Language School if anyone on here is from there.
Let me know about any advice you have. |

bump - and
Will be looking for a cell phone - rice cooker and a few other things. I Hope to find someone leaving the area where I could purchase theirs.
Also, any info on the water? I hear differing opinions about boiling. |

Working at KNC is like having bubonic plague. Just type KNC into the search engine. |

Thats what I saw, but the posts concerned problems that dont seem to be common to this location. Or at least presumably so.
I also made a few modifications to my contract, have specifics about paday, and other mentioned problems, plus there is NO korean so there is zero possibility of double talk. The director speaks english, or at least they said they were the director on the phone and they asked for the doccuments be addressed to them in Gunsan for the visa.
EDIT: Heck maybe the actual director dosent speak english, all the better. I made some nice adjustments to that contract that passed with flying colors, not speaking the language would certianlly explain it. "any change to schedule, or teaching conditions must be put into writing." so on so forth.
So I'm willing to take the risk as my contract and conditions dont seem to fit with the complaints. Also no one has ever said anything negitive about the Gunsan location.
May have slit my own throaght, may be sitting pretty.
I chose Gunsan as it seems to be on the rise and there is a millitary instilation nearby. As a Marine this looked very pleasing to me, so was curious to meet any others in the area. Plus my other job offer was to work a public school in Goheung, very small and way off the beatn path. |

Go to Seoul, there's a military base there.
Or go to Osan.
I've never heard anyone say anything nice about Gunsan. |

If you're choosing Gunsan because there's a military base there..........then don't. The army guys don't leave the base much. The town itself is very isolated from the base. They don't interact much.
You would have to proactively go to the base and make contact that way. |

Sorry, I was drunk-posting earlier. If you're in Gunsan it won't be the notorious KNC, which only has its 3 Seoul branches, as far as I'm aware. This place probably just happens to share its name. Unlucky for them. |

i would also add that i have lived in seocheon for 1 year before ( it is across the river from gunsan).
i visited the bars there a few times during the year as there is NOTHING in seocheon and found that the locals in gunsan were really negative towards english teachers. much more than the other places in korea.
never knew the reason why that was, but i found it a little strange. |

At least I had one thought right.
The more I hear about Gunsan (after I sent in my documents, thread was dead for a few days till the Day I sent them in.) it sounds as if I dug my own hole.
Guess I'll just have to make the best of it.
Anyone need to borrow my shovel? |

Do you have your visa yet? It might not be too late. Good luck getting your documents back, though..
Plenty of jobs out there... |

If you stay in Gunsan, you'll save a lot of money. Dead boring and nothing to do. If that's not your bag, you'll spend most of your money touring elsewhere every weekend. Seoul is a 3-hour bus, one way. I don't believe there is a direct bus to Busan, though. |

instead of the bus you can take the train to seoul.
a three hour ordeal winding between rice paddies that is HORRENDOUS!!
a dreadfully tedious experience that passes at about 35km/h.
racher-clacker-racker-clakker-racker-clacker!!!!
