I didn't find it particularly funny, but at the same time I can't say it's particularly offensive either. People who practice politics of the sort the Palin family practices open themselves up for mockery.

When Sarah Palin stops talking, she'll stop being talked about. I'm not saying she should stop talking mind you, just that this family brings it upon itself. Hell, their own responses to Letterman's joke demonstrate exactly the sort of thing that makes so much of America laugh at them. Come on, trying to construe the joke as being about their 14 year old instead of about the daughter who all ready had a baby out of wedlock once?

When are people going to stop being so whiny about what comedian's say? That goes for the likes of Hannity, Limbaugh, etc as well, who might not intend to be comedians, but manage just fine at it none the less. These people mock our society for a living. If you don't think they're funny, don't watch them.

I found it offensive. It's the kind of comment that I'd make after 5 double whiskeys, but sober, one should worry.

Also, if Letterman said that about my daughter, I'd be sure to knock his teeth down his throat.

Sarah Palin is a fair target - and her daughter's pregnancy and relationship with the father was a legitimate political issue to the extent that it reflected the candidate's political platform, but I don't think it's proper use of political humor to target her daughter at this stage.

The Joke is The Joke.....

Meaning, that any joke is when like does not meet like. What is expected, is not perceived.... (read Koestler and the Act of Creation for more fine tuned elabortion....) . It is a brain conflict and when what is expected, does not arrive..... Sarah Palin... and children and children's children.

Thus any afterfall, is just a joke gone south. Let it shine. It fits the definition of a pun , perfectly.

It was fair to assume that Letterman was commenting about the 14 year old since 18 year old Bristol wasn't even at the game. However, when Letterman "apologized," if you can call it that, I believe him that he thought it was Bristol he was commenting on. Still a tasteless joke however. He likes picking on the Palins though, so he shouldn't be shocked by the backlash. What goes around comes around.

Wow, The Palin's are really going after him as well. That is one incredibly sensitive person, amazing she almost became Vice President with skin that thin.

Even more ridiculous is how dumb the joke was, it was just a seriously dumb joke.

Watching the CNN clip, and Letterman falling all over himself in apologies, is kind of weird. Generally, powerful political figures just let things bounce right off of them, but Palin being so supersensitive, you could almost feel political retribution and 'payback' oozing from the Palin's voices....scary, since they don't have real power, but I suppose they do have influential power.

I'd smack Dave down for that. And that leering monkey who's always backing Dave up at his side, "Yeah, that's right, Dave,' 'Spot on there Dave;' I'd smack him down, too.

Yeah he had it coming from Palin. Humiliating someone's daughter, anybody's daughter, just to make money shilling jokes is just plain tacky. He knows it and he's just trying to avoid munching on the proverbial ess-aich-eye-tee burger.

Doug Stanhope, the day after she is put up as the Vice Presidential Candidate..

" She has 5 kids and two of them are retarded. Well one of them has down syndrome and one of them volunteered for Iraq.
"

Letterman's joke wasn't funny not because it was cruel or rude but because it just wasn't a very good joke. The 5 kids/2 retarded joke was pretty funny..great timing and I didn't know anything about her when i heard it so the punchline was unexpected.

Wow, Palin is taking this on new levels. What a nutcase.

She's hitting more shows talking about it. It's on the top of Yahoo News now with a video clip of more 'attack back' segments at Letterman that she's doing.

Not that she was much of a politician to begin with, but with skin this thin, she certainly wouldn't have made it on a Federal/National level politically.

I cannot even begin to imagine how busy Obama or Bush or any other REAL leader would have been if they'd responded to every single criticism and comedic joke made toward them.

Palin, yet again proving how incapable she'd be at anything national.

She is scoring massive political capital for this. Defending her 14 year old daughter from insults from a rude North Eastern comic? Huge points. I'm even sympathetic on this one.

mises is right. It's more about seizing political opportunity than thin skin. Certainly picking on 14 year old children is poor sport and she'll get sympathy from a large portion of the populace.
